High School Highlights and Lowlights:Roundball Roundup

The lights were on in the Greensboro Coliseum for MLK day and the two of our local teams were able to come away with victories on Monday. The Page Pirates and the Greensboro Day School Bengals were the winners and the Dudley Panthers boys’ team found the opposition from Oak Hill(the #1 ranked boys team in the nation) to be way too tough to handle. We did get a chance to see Tywon Lawson of Oak Hill in action and he was the man who controlled the flow of the game and Lawson is the main reason Oak Hill is #1. Lawson is headed to UNC-CH and I personally believe he can help the Heels the minute he steps on the court. Lawson impressed me as much or more than LeBron James when the future Cleveland Cavalier was in here 3 years ago.

Lawson put on quite a show and he can also hit the three-point shot, but what about the Smith-Grensboro Day Game? For my money, the best game of the day. GDS defeated a fast charging Golden Eagle club 56-49, but Reggie Peace really has his Smith team coming tgether. Brian Wynn can pretty much play with anybody in the state. I saw him twice last week and liked what I saw. The thing about Wynn is it’s not just all offense(he had 25 points vs. GDS and 19 in the Eagles win against Northwest), Wynn plays great defense. Wynn played man “D” on Northwest’s Alfonso Scandrett on Friday and it proved to be the difference in the game.

Greensboro Day(21-2) played well enough to win but I have to believe the Bengals are seeing much tougher defense now that they have become the team to beat here in Guilford County. Johnny Thomas and Josh Lanham will be be earning their inside baskets from here on out and Alan Fox will be a tired young man by the time this season’s over.

The Page Pirates collected a win on Monday at the Coliseum and Robet Kent’s club has been winning steadily in recent weeks. Page knocked off Winston Salem Reynolds 65-51 behind the 25 points of Antoine Adams. Page is now 11-5 overall with the win and after the loss to GDS Smith is 11-6, but Smith is 5-0 in the Metro 4-A conference and all alone in first place. Watch out for the end of the season showdown between Smith and Page. High Point Central may have a say about that Metro crown as well. Central fell to Forsyth Counrty Day on Monday 60-54, but the Bison defeated High Point Andrews 79-75 back in Saturday. Former Northwest Guilford standout Rusty LaRue is the coach at FCD and he has his Furies playing a very smart brand of basketball.

Highlights of the week would include as we mentined earlier, the Smith boys under the direction of Reggie Peace. To have his team in first place this quickly has made for a remarkable return to Smith for Reggie. The Smith girls can’t catch a break. Calvin Hunt’s ladies lost a real tight game with Northwest before falling 46-43 last Friday night. High Point Central gets a highlight for that win over HP Andrews, even though Andrews lost their point guard Marcus Gilchrist to injury in the first half. Jermaine Armstrong led the Bison to victory with 33 points. The Grimsley girls are still shining very bright now 6-0(Metro) and 13-1 overall. Phil Weaver just keeps on turning out winners.

The lowlights are still shining on the Glenn Bobcats now 8-9 after Monday’s 78-53 setback against Mt. Zion at the Coliseum. The Northwest Guilford boys and the Grimsley boys are also feeling the lowbeams.(Grimsley is riding low at 2-12 and Norhtwest is struggling at 5-11 with no conference wins. High Point Cnetral’s girls have yet to round into form and one has to wonder how long it will be before they see the light.
