Boys Teams Show Well in Opening Round of Playoffs

The boys took to the floor in the opening round sectional playoff games on Tuesday night and from what I’m seeing we came out looking pretty good headed for round number two.

The only team to really take it on the chin was the Page Pirates and they were down by as many as 18 points in the second half and they fought back but did not have enough to stop Mount Tabor. The Spartans defeated the Pirates 64-57 and Tabor moves on to Round Two. Page was led by Marsharee Neley and Shelton Carter but Page could not get back on defense quick enough to slow down the Spartans. Julius Brooks was very strong on defense and his shot-blocking ability will very valuable in the future.

Speaking of the future, Neley is headed for Old Dominion and I think he can help. Marsharee is a mover and he flows quickly up and down the court and he moves very well attacking the lane and the basket. I really like the way he flows with the ball and hope he can make a solid contribution at the next level. Neley has a fairly consistant three point shot and maybe we will see more of him on the Division I level. In regards to the loss to Mt. Tabor the Pirates cut the 18 point lead to 3 late in the 4th but could not get any closer.

The Smith family(Justin, Jeff, and Johnny) was at the Page game but the Smith Golden Eagles were feeling hopeful and they got their wish as they topped Hopewell 59-38. The Eagles are now 19-9 and Tavarus Alston made sure they got into round two with 32 big points and his fellow senior Brian Wynn chipped in 14. Coach Reggie Peace has been steering this boat in the right directon during the 2005/2006 season and there is no need to stop now. Everyone should be proud of the Green and Gold.

I went to High School with a man by the name of Mark Shelley and now his son(Jordan Shelley) has sent Southeast Guilford on to the next game of the playoffs after he hit two key free throws in OT to lift the SEG Falcons over Fred T. Foard 65-62. The Falcons improved to 13-12 with the upset win and now watch out for the former Southern Durham coach(Beckwith) as he takes his SEG team on the road Thursday night.

Northeast Guilford without Guy Wilson for the second straight game, still knocked off Oxford Webb 61-42. I mentioned Wilson was missing from the Dudley game back on Friday and I found out on Monday from NEG AD John Primm that Wilson had been suspended from school last Friday and by the Athletic Rules he had miss the next two games for NEG. Wilson’s three-day suspension from school came while the Rams were playing 2 games and therefore Wilson was out of school and had to sit out those two ballgames. That was a long explaination but I hope it made some sense. After their win over Webb the Rams are now 21-6.

Ragsdale made short work of Southwest Guilford with the Tigers claiming a 69-51 victory. While in Jamestown we need to mention that Ragsdale, Morehead, McMichael, and Northwest Guilford will all be trying to out- grapple the competition and win state wrestling titles this coming weekend. Creed(Ragsdale) and Coggins(Southeast Guilford) are two local names that I will be keeping an eye on. Back to the Hoops, Ragsdale is now 13-12 with the win on Tuesday.

Not to far from Jamestown, over in High Point, the Andrews Raiders romped past Asheboro 84-52 behind Kellen Brand and Marcus Gilchrist. Andrews, coached by former Dudley assistant James Able, looks like they might be able to make a big dent in the playoff competition. Andrews(19-8) has the talent with Brand and Gilchrist to make some major noise but look out for Trinity(23-2) looming somewhere down the line for all the local 3-A teams. The question of the day is what happened to that Matt Watkins kid from Trinity? Did he get hurt or did he move away? Maybe our source(Greg Johnson) from Culler’s Store in High Point can find out the info for us.

The girls are back in action tonight with High Point Central at Grimsley the Headliner, and don’t forget Greensboro Day School in round one of the Boys NCIHSAA 3-A State Tournament at home vs. Ravenscroft Thursday morning at 11:30am
