Heading Back Down to Earth

It’s hard to come back down after the State Championship game with Greensboro Day School taking the title Saturday afternoon 61-53 over Charlotte Christian. The Bengals beat the Knights and it was a very satisfying victory for all that were involved. I love being around the big games and they are even more fun when our home team wins. Freddy Johnson’s crew proved that their season was no fluke. They finished #1 in the state regular season, won the Pizza Hut Little Four Tournament, and then capped it all off with winning their State Tournament.

It was one heck of a year for guys like Alan Fox(Little Four MVP and ball-handler extrodinaire), Christian Hayes(super senior inside sub off the Bengal bench , Josh Lanham(excellent defense in the Championship Game), Johnny Thomas(rebounds and socres like there is no tommorrow), Travis Leonard(three point shooter from the corner and another defensive wizard), Brandon Davis(hit key buckets and scored major baskets when the Bengals needed them in a hurry), Bruce Woodall(taking on a J.J. Redick-like shooter’s mentality), Jay Lewis(silent but deadly with his shooter’s touch), Dana Cook(a big man with a big heart, he gave the championship trophy to the Bengal fans after the game) and BJ Rieves(plays larger than he should and that’s a good thing).

The Bengals are the best and now will Dudley or Northeast win the boys public-school 3-A title? GDS got it done on the 3-A private school level and now it’s up to the Dudley boys, the Northeast boys, the Dudley girls, the Northwest girls, the High Point Central girls, the Eastern Guilford girls, or maybe the Bishop McGuniess girls to win a crown and bring it back to our area.

It will be a fun week that is for sure. Duke and North Carolina will go at it in Durham on Saturday night and if you missed it North Carolina stopped Duke for the second time this season over the weekend on the women’s hardwoods.
The ACC women’s tournament comes to the Greensboro Coliseum this week and we will be host to some of the best basketball in the nation over the next three weeks.

The UNCG women finished #2 in the Southern Conference and they are the #2 seed in the tourney this week down in Charleston, South Carolina. The UNCG men have a much lower seed and will need to upset somebody to make it to the big dance. The Elon men have a decent seed and they will be trouble for the SoCon teams. The Greensboro College women won their tournament and are now in the NCAA Division III regionals this week. The Guilford College men and women are done but N.C. A&T has the MEAC tourney coming up for both teams next week.

Stacey Keibler lost on Dancing with the Stars and we lost both Don Knotts and Darren McGavin this past weekend. Until next time, remember that GS.com is your best buddy on the field or on the court.
