Glenn Says Roof Deserves Another Year/The Rope is Getting Tight Around Bunting’s Neck

In this week’s award- winning College Football Corner I need to mention what I heard on 850 the Buzz this past Saturday morning. David Glenn the Saturday morning host and the man in charge of the ACC Sports Journal said several things that caught my attention. Dave has one of the best shows on sports radio and he was putting out the word on the ACC Football coaches.

Dave said that Duke should give Ted Roof one more year. Glenn feels that TR needs a season with the key players that he has recruited to Durham and that the freshmen and sophomores will soon becoming Juniors and Seniors and that Joe Alleva the Duke AD should let Roof have a chance to coach a veteran team. Duke is 0-6 and if they go 0-11 will the Devils stick with Roof, David Glenn the ACC’s top media man says,”Duke Must Keep Roof”.

Glenn also informed us that Jim Grobe is the highest paid football coach in the state of North Carolina. The Wake Forest leader makes more than Amato, Bunting, and Roof and even more than Tom Knotts the coach down at Charlotte Independence High School. Daryl Barnes the former coach at Richmond County is retired and now the key Administrator at Trinity High School.(Rumor has it that Barnes was the highest paid coach in the history of all North Carolina football) Grobe deserves the money and his Deacons just finished off NC State and now stand 6-1 and are ranked in the Top 25 in the country.

The rope is getting tight around John Bunting’s neck and some of the Carolina fans want JB to be fired or to resign before this Thursday night’s game with Virginia on national TV(ESPN). The die-hard Heels’ fans feel UNC-CH might end looking like East Chapel High School on the National stage. Coach Bunting has to be feeling the pressure but Jeff Summey the owner of Libby Hill Seafood on Summit Avenue here in Greensboro told me that Big Heels in the AD’s office have already promised Bunting that he will be back in 2007. Mr. Koury from Burlington, (the brother of the late Joseph Koury from Greensboro), is a HUGE Tar Heel financial backer of the Football program and Koury is saying you can say so long to his money if Carolina keeps Bunting and they keep losing. If the Money Well starts drying up then they may need to get a longer rope.

Not too much to talk about in the Chuck Amato saga this week because all the attention is on Wake Forest and it should be. The Demon Deacons snared a solid win in Raleigh on Saturday and Wake deserves the week off.

If you haven’t picked up on it yet our word of the week is Deserves. Locally Guilford College deserves some more credit. The Quakers beat Bridgewater 33-28 and they did it with runningback Micah Rushing rolling for 150 yards and a TD run and QB Josh Vogelbach only threw 1 TD pass but he ran for 2 more and completed 22-41 for 238 yards. The loss by Bridgewater to Guilford was the Eagles first Old Dominion Athletic Conference setback since 2000 and the Quakers had lost 7 straight to the Eagles before Saturday’s big victory at GC.

The only other area winner was Appalachian State where the Mountaineers scored 14 points in the first quarter and made it stand up as they eased past Wofford 14-7 up in Boone. Freshman QB Armanti Edwards continued to shine as he passed for one score and ran for the other ASU TD. Kicker Julian Rauch out of Gastonia Ashbrook HS converted both extra point attempts. RB Kevin Richardson kept up his consistant ground work hitting for 111 yards on 23 carries.

It was a tough weekend for our other boys and I guess girls because the cheerleaders take losing hard, as all the remaining teams went down in a cloud of dust. Shenandoah passed for 2 yards but they rushed for 228 on 66 tries and they put away our Greensboro College Pride 36-10. NC A&T fell to 0-6 and the Aggies have now lost 11 in a row after Saturday’s 37-21 loss to Delaware State. East Carolina, Elon, Winston-Salem State, and Western Carolina all dropped tough games with the ECU Pirates being the only squad to get beat badly. WCU goes out in OT, Elon losses with just a minute to go in the game and WSU falls 10-6 to Bethune-Cookman.
