It is Quiet on the College Football Corner

What can you say about the College Football season in North Carolina?  John Bunting is on his way out and Butch Davis is going to be the new sheriff in Chapel Hill, Chuck Amato is one loss away from being on the next plane to somewhere in Florida and Wolfpack fans are already waiting at the RDU Airport hoping that Bill Cowher’s aircraft will be arriving soon.

Wake Forest still has a very good chance to play for the ACC Football Championship against Georgia Tech.  The Deacons failed in the quest to best Virginia Tech but Maryland will do just fine if WFU can do what they couldn’t in Winston last Saturday night and finish the regular season with victory over the Terrapins this weekend at College Park.  The Demon Deacons have to find some kind of running game to take the pressure off of quarterback Riley Skinner.

North Carolina kicked N.C. State to the curb 23-9 and now the Heels will close things out at Duke.  The undisciplined Wolfpack will host East Carolina Saturday at 7pm.  ECU can still make the Conference USA championsip game if Southern Miss loses to Marshall.

N.C. A&T left no doubt that this would be the worst season in Aggie history with their 41-29 loss to South Carolina State. The Aggie’s Michael Ferguson, (whose dad used to be the head coach of the Dudley Panthers), rushed for 175 yards on 22 carries and scored 2 TD’s.  A&T finishes at 0-8/0-11.

The Applachian State Mountaineers should get their NCAA I-AA title defense rolling this weekend in Boone.(App plays Coastal Carolina Saturday at 3:30pm in Kidd Brewer Stadium)  Western Carolina got murdered by Florida 62-0 and Elon fell to the Citadel 44-7 and for most of our area teams the end is no longer in sight, the end is here, just like last summer when Oldies 93 sent newsman Ed Snow on an extended fishing trip.

I had the opportunity to meet and have lunch with Michael Cooper of Guilford College this week.  Michael is a 6’2, 230 pound fullback for the Quakers from Orlando, Florida and he hopes to be workng for ESPN one day, then he can take us all out to lunch.  Remember, “GO WFU” up at Maryland, because WAKE FOREST is, “The Triad’s Team”.Â
