Guilford Great Eight Basketball Polls

I went to see the Dudley-Grimsley girls game on Wednesday night and just like we said here at greensborosports.com the WhirlieGirls are the team to beat.  Right now it’s the Greensboro Day School boys and the Grimsley girls, they are the teams that the others in the area are chasing.

College note:N.C. State wants Tom O’Brien of Boston College to be the Wolfpack’s next football coach.  What happened to Paul Johnson of Navy?  Johnson is younger and if you hired Johnson at least you would be going outside the conference to get your coach.  The ACC coaches already have everything on O’Brien and I  mean everything.  He was at Virginia working under George Welsch before he went to BC.

THE GUILFORD GREAT EIGHT BOYS BASKETBALL POLL

#1) Greensboro Day School(The Bengals just defeated Burlington Williams 72-52 and GDS with Johnny Thomas, Bruce Woodall, Josh Lanham, Travis Leonard, Brandon Davis, and this new kid Josh Hicks are rolling at 7-0)

#2) Dudley(The Panthers will be solid and we can’t wait to see the Dudley-GDS final at the Little Four as long as both squads take care of business early in December. Kenny Belton and Josh Chavis are a great inside-outside 1-2 punch.  Dudley has already knocked off a tough High Point Central team at HPC back in November)

#3) High Point Central(Coach Stan K.’s boys are coming off a 83-57 drubbing of Eastern Randolph and the Black Bison have some new faces on this year’s team to help out returning star Jermaine Armstrong)

#4) Northeast Guilford(The Rams, with the county’s most interesting name on their club in Mezie Uzochukwu, will be a major contender for Dudley’s Triad 3-A conference crown.  The Rams are at 4-0 to start the year and with the crowd yelling Uza, Uza, Uza, Uza, this will be a fun team to watch and they may make a run in the Little Four)

#5) Ragsdale(The Tiger boys may make a run on the top four of the GGE in the next few days. After their impressive second half against Grimsley back on Tuesday(a 58-45 RHS win) the Tigers dropped their first game of the year to HP Andrews on Wednesday 54-47. The Tigers are now 5-1)

#6) Smith(The Eagles are in the Metro 4-A and they beat High Point Central 3 times last season and now can Reggie Peace’s squad improve on those numbers?)

#7) Grimsley(The Whirlies can run, they can rebound, they can block shots, but can they adjust to changes the top teams will make on them during the tight games?  Manley, Smith, Tonkins, and Beloved form a solid nucleus but who will be the other man to step up?)

#8) High Point Andrews(As soon as Marcus Gilchrist gets rolling this group could blow anybody out, but consistancy will be the key to Red Raiders success)                                Eight teams got into this week’s poll and eight were left out.  Who will be the newest member to get into the Great Eight Poll next week?

          GIRLS GREAT EIGHT BASKETBALL POLL

#1) Grimsley(The WhirlieGirls are the team to beat.  Trumae Lucas is the best all-around girls basketball player in Guilford County.  GHS did not wilt under the late-game Dudley pressure and went on to win Wednesday’s game 50-42 with the Panthers and now GHS is 6-0 on the young season.  GHS will have to learn to move the ball better against the pressure “D” in the half court offense as the season progresses)

#2) Dudley(Sometimes the Panthers try to run the ball too fast with Austin, Terry, Porter, and Kee, and in the future they will have to settle down more and set the ball up and get into their offense which features Sierra Little in the high post screen, pick and roll.  Little has to work on her attitude and not get caught up into making useless fouls on hard screens.  Little got 2 fouls early against GHS and had to sit out almost all of the first half.  Dudley needs More from Little)

#3) Page(The Pirates have yet to lose and they just demolished WS Reynolds on Wednesday 65-19.  PHS is lead by Alexis Neal and Jasmine Gill and they are 5-0.  Neal and Gill, it sounds like the Harlem Globetrotters and the NBA coming together)

#4) Northeast Guilford(The Rams are 2-2 and the leader is Mercedes King with 19 points agaisnt Northwest, a 51-39 victim to NEG back on Tuesday)

#5) Northwest Guilford(The Vikings are 4-1 after that loss to NEG and coach Darlene Joyner’s unit is paced by senior Asha Hardaway and NWG will be around to cause trouble for the top seeds in the Little Four)

#6) High Point Central(They’re saying this will be an off-year for Coach Kenny Carter’s club and after the 71-51 loss to Eastern Randolph the nay-sayers may on to something)

#7) Ragsdale(The Tigers lost to Grimsley on Tuesday but bounced back to beat HP Andrews on Wednesday 63-50 and RHS is 4-2 and will be a strong contender in their 3-A conference)

#8) Southeast Guilford(The Falcons under the direction of first-year head coach Kim Furlough are 3-3 after their 59-26 win over Southern and SEG will face Page on Friday)

  1. Yes Grimsley girls are tuff and play together as a team…. They held their composure on last night against Dudley and did not back down at all…. These girls have heart…. I was very proud of them as they went forth in victory….
Great job Lucas, Fields, Hargrave and the coaching staff.
Now we are wating for the Grimsley boys to bounce back after the lost to Ragsdale on Tues night…
Let go Marlan Smith, Keith Manley and the crew of the Whirles lets get back at 500 and go past that mark with our next Victory on Friday nighr against Eden MOREHEAD…

  2. I forgot to mention Felecia Tate last week. She is one of Phil Weaver’s former players and now is helping as an assistant coach along with Butler and Bullard.

  3. 1-Dudley, 2-HPC, 3-GDS this should be the rankings as of today, this will be the rankings in about 3 weeks Asheboro took GDS to ot a couple of weeks ago you are still going off of last years team get with the program.
