Flying with the Eagles

I was at the big game on Tuesday and the Smith Golden Eagles under the direction of Reggie Peace put together a pleasing pre-Christmas cantata, driving home a 70-69 overtime win against the North Forsyth Vikings.  The Eagle girls were also winners and if the N&R records have been correct as of late, this was the first win of the season for the Golden Eagle girls.  The JV boys and girls were also victorious so as you can tell, the Eagles were flying high on Tuesday night.

The Eagles will have to settle back down to earth quickly because they travel to take on the powerhouse known as Dudley High School tonight(Wednesday).  The Dudley boys fell hard to Oak Hill on Tuesday 84-63, but Oak Hill is the #1 team in the entire land.  Dudley was led by Kenny Belton’s 22 points and we now know that Oak Hill is known as the Warriors.  I never knew the OH nickname until I saw it today in the short-form N&R.

Dudley-Smith tonight, along with Page at Northeast Guilford in the new John Primm Gym.  Northeast is 9-0 after their win over Southwest on Monday and Page is 2-5 after topping Smith 49-47 last Friday.  The unbeaten Page girls(8-0) will face 7-2 NEG at 6:00.  Boys slated to start at 7:30.

Elsewhere last night, Grimsley took two from East Forsyth, 77-62 in the boys game and the WhirlieGirls go to 11-0 after taking EF 59-34.  I hope Marlan Smith Sr. will check in and shed some light on those Grimsley games for us.  Northwest got a split, with High Point Central taking the boys matchup 69-40 and the NWG girls winning 68-60.  Hopefully Greg Johnson will send some comments our way about the HPC-NWG contests.

Those are the big games on our docket and again, thanks to the staff at Smith High School for having us over there last night and don’t forget Jim Modlin at NEG-Page tonight while Paul Lambeth will have updates for us on Dudley-Smith on AM 950 WPET radio  beginning at 7pm.

Has anyone heard what ever happened to Mark Amazon formerly of 790 the Ball and if you get a chance go to our Amateur link and see some of the new comments on “Is the Ball Going Flat”?, a piece we did back during the summer and it still is bringing in some very interesting comments.  People are also asking, what ever happened to Big Bill Ownbey and TJ?(Matt Pencola is at the Buzzard 100.3)  We know Paul Lambeth did a nice piece on the NFL for us this week, Thanks Paul.  We have the Greensboro sports scene covered with greensborosports.com and AM 950, “The Guilford County Sports Connection”.

  1. The last time I saw Bill Ownbey was out at the BelAire Golf Course. Bill was the hockey voice for the old Greensboro Generals at the Coliseum and he was a very good golfer. What ever happened to Jay Brame who used to own the Generals and the Golf Course?

  2. Andy i did not make it to the Grimsley Whirlies game last night had to attend a Christmas party and i did not see any scoring at all listed in the paper at all for the high schools. Marlan Smith Jr told me that they had to win the game last night did not want to go in the holidays without a victory…. So the boys came out strong and ran with a victory on last night against East Forsyth team who had beaten Page earlier. Marlan Smith Jr lead the Whirlies with 17 pts who was in foul trouble early in the game… Marlan is having strong season so far and he is making his dad proud. His avg i do beleive is around 18 pts this season. He told me that Keith Manley had a strong game and also JB Beloved had a good game too.. So that put the Whirlies boys right at 4 and 5 for wins and losses. The boys will face the Dudley Panthers in the Little Four next week in the first round…. This will be a chance to see if we can stand the test against the best…. Josh Chavis is a very good point Guard who loves to run the ball and get his team involved early and he is a good playmaker along with Kenny Belton who is their center….. So it will be a battle to see Marlan Smith and Josh Chavis who both played AAU together… Also Andy looking to see Keith Manley go against Kenny Belton two big man… I love to watch this Kid Manley who is growing and getting better as the season goes on….. He will be a force to be reckon with…….
Also i spoke with Coach Corbett who was happy to get a victory Hats goes off to theWhirlies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See everyone on next week at the Little four
Andy happy Holidays to you and yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. The word on Jay Brame is that the Tipster as he was known to many people, he died about 2 years ago and I saw Greensboro Day coach Freddy Johnson at Jay Brame’s funeral. Brame did own BelAire Golf Course with his brothers but I don’t think he ever owned the Generals hockey team. Brame was a huge N.C. State Wolfpack fan. My question today would be what ever happened to ‘ole Ed Ross and what about Tommy the guy who used to run the Spring Valley Cleaners and once was seen fishing along the banks of the Buffalo Creek on the Roland Martin TV Show?
Thanks Mr. Smith for the update on Grimsley and be sure to check out this week’s Great Eight Poll.
