The ACC Today

Paul Lambeth got us the scoop on the Guilford College Quakers and their win on Wednesday night and I was tracking the ACC teams on radio in between my interview with Duke Blue Devil super-fan Bruce Mitchell.

Wake Forest claimed the most exciting victory with Mike Durm’s put back of a Kyle Visser miss to win it for the Demon Deacons 67-65 in Winston-Salem.  Mike Drum is a graduate of North Forsyth High School and he is a former Metro 4-A conference player.  Great win by the Deacs and I heard it on 101.1 and 98.1.

Duke grabbed a huge road win at Boston College 78-70 to break a four-game losing streak.  In our discussion at the Beef Burger, Bruce and I couldn’t think of that hill up in Boston, but it came to me later, it was Chesnut Hill.  The Devils are back and I barely heard most of this one on 98.3.

N.C. State ran out of gas and Maryland ripped the Wolfpack 85-70 in Raleigh.  The Pack has lost three straight and they have Virginia Tech coming up next.  I caught this game on 600 WSJS.  What has happened to the Red and White that beat the light Blue and White?

Finally the UNCG Spartans played like an ACC team on Wednesday night when they handled visiting Western Carolina 79-68 with Spartan star Kyle Hines forced to stay out of Fleming Gym because of his ejection from Monday’s game with Elon.  The Hines-less Spartans were led in scoring by Ricky Hickman’s 19 points.  Hickman is another Metro 4-A conference product playing his HS ball at East Forsyth.  I heard this game on the “Guilford County Sports Connection”, AM 950 WPET.

A couple of UNCG Spartan thoughts.  It has to be like some sort of convergance when the Spartans travel to play a road-game at Wofford in SPARTANburg, South Carolina and it was good, but still sad, to see Mike Fleming at the UNCG games on Saturday at the Fleming Gym on the UNCG campus.  Good part was to see Mr. Fleming at the game, the sad part was to see them rolling him into the gym in a wheelchair.  Â
