Around the Horn

They were playing high school baseball again on Wednesday afternoon and the warm weather led me back to the Grimsley field as the Whirlies took on the Phoenix of McMichael.  The home team went up early pushing across 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning and they made it stand up for a 5-3 victory.

The win was the Whirlies’ second of the year and from what I was seeing Coach Alan Ashkinazy felt his team could have played much better even though they captured the victory.  The Whirlies committed 4 errors and AA is never happy when his team is making mistakes.

Catcher Gabe Dimock continues to hit the ball well for Grimsley going 2-3 with two doubles and a RBI, and the same can be said for leadoff man Alan Craven who collected two hits and drove in a run.  The opposing teams are still not giving shortstop Clint Moore anything to hit but Clint is still drawing walks and he got the save on the mound coming in and working around a bases loaded jam in the top of the 7th by striking out two McMichael batters to close out the game.

Grimsley is now 2-1 and will face Page at GHS on Friday night at 7pm.  In other area games on Wednesday, High Point Central and Coach Cook continued their strong start by whipping HP Andrews 16-3 and Southern Guilford defeated Western Guilford in 8 innings by a 12-11 score.  We’ll see you at the Ballpark.
