It was a busy weekend for sports and sports entertainment. The college basketball tournaments are winding down, Major League Baseball got started Sunday night, NASCAR was the running the car of tomorrow in Martinsville, the Greensboro Revolution won their opener at the Greensboro Coliseum, the WWE broke attendance records at Ford’s Field in Detroit for their Wrestlemanina event, and greensborosports.com was on WXII TV 12 on the Saturday night news.
The men’s NCAA tournament will conclude tonight in Atlanta with Florida taking on Ohio State for the title. It’s a re-match of the NCAA football championship from earlier this year and I will pull for Ohio State just so Florida can’t repeat.  Let’s go Buckeyes so Duke can be the only team to win back-to-back titles since the UCLA days. I broadcast the boys 10 and under AAU National Championship basketball game from the Greensboro Coliseum back in 1996 and Florida Gator point guard Taurean Green was on the winning squad that beat Greensboro for the crown. Taurean Green is the son of Sidney Green that played for the Orlando Magic. I like the way that Mike Conley Jr. and Greg Oden play for Ohio State, these kids are on the right track and speaking of track how about that Mike Conley Sr.
Sammy Henderson played his high school football for Northeast Guilford and I broadcast his games on the radio too. Sammy is now known as “Showtime” Henderson and he led the Greensboro Revolution to a victory in their home-opener at the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday night. Henderson scored 2 TD’s on pass receptions and helped get the Revolution into scoring position with some excellent kick returns. Receiver Antoine Calloway is the best player on the team, I don’t care what you read anywhere else, Calloway is the Best. The Revolution were 64-54 winners over the Cincinnati Marshals and they need to get on the promotional trail so the fans can learn more about this team. With the Grasshoppers starting soon the Revolution has the field all to themselves for the first couple of weeks but once the Grasshoppers get going, it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump to First Horizon Park and the locals will be lining up.
The Car of Tomorrow was on the track up in Martinsville and Jimmie Johnson drove past Jeff Gordon to take the checkered flag at Virginia’s favorite short-track, the famous Martinsville Motor Speedway. From the word I got on the MRN radio broadcast the NASCAR people don’t really like this car of tomorrow and announcer Steve Post said in his post-interviews that the Rick Hendrick and Joe Gibbs Racing teams will continue to rule the NASCAR roost.
Bruce Mitchell was like money-in-the-bank with his Wrestlemania predictions here at greensborosports.com. Bruce was calling for Mr. Kennedy to win the ladder match and he did, Mr. McMahon would get his shaved and he did, the Undertaker would remain unbeaten at Wrestlemania and he did, and that John Cena would keep his belt with a win over Shawn Michaels and that’s what happened. It was a good week for Sports Entertainment at greensborosports.com. Over 80,000 fans showed up to see the Wrestlemania event live at Ford’s Field in Detroit, Michigan.
The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals were on ESPN to start-up the MLB season on Sunday night and the Mets were cracking the bats early runninng out to a 5-0 lead. Greensborosports.com was on WXII TV 12 on Saturday night at 11pm when they were doing a story about the web sites and blogs covering the Tolly Carr/Casey Bokhoven incident. The news story showed a commnet box from greensborosports.com. which was evidence of the interest that readers had in the greensborosports.com blog.
