Bullington: I’m not a writer, I just play one on the internet

By Bruce Bullington, greensborosports.com Staff Writer

One of the biggest pet peeves I have is when sports writers do what they call “bullet columns”. You’ve seen them a thousand times. It’s where a writer doesn’t have enough decent material for one column, so he strings together thoughts on several topics to fill the space.

So, without further delay, here is a bullet column. Two things to keep in mind when you read it:

1) I’m not a sports writer

2) I’m lazy

The Bat-hoppers have the worst luck when it comes to the weather. I don’t have statistics to back me up, but over the past ten years or so it seems they are at home during monsoon season here in Greensboro and on the road during the nicest days of the year.

Look no further than this week. We have been near record highs for this time of year and the Grasshoppers are on the road for the first two weeks of the month (with the exception of a one-game home stand this Sunday against Hickory).

The Hoppers will be back home for an extended home stand in the middle of the month, and I can almost guarantee showers (maybe even snow) all week.

Oriole’s manager Sam Perlozzo may find himself on the hot seat. After winning 11 of their first 18, Baltimore has lost 8 of 9 and has looked bad doing it. Kevin Millar has already popped off to the local media about his playing time and team leaders Melvin Mora and Miguel Tejada are already in mid-season moping form.

Shame on the Panthers for releasing Keyshawn Johnson. He proved to be one of their most sure-handed receivers and team leaders. I know draft experts raved about their draft last week, but I think with two backup-caliber quarterbacks they are in for another middling-season in the tough NFC South.

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they are holding the line on their season ticket prices for next season. They had delayed the announcement for several weeks, leading to some internet speculation that they were raising prices in spite of missing the playoffs. I’m sure the team is kicking itself for not getting an increase in for next season, but coming out the lockout and two last place finishes they were eager to get as many people locked in before the season as they could.

Finally, I hate Barry Bonds. I really do.

  1. When does Bonds retire from MLB? Does he break the record and then retire? Who knows he might move on to WWE then. He would for sure fit in. Bonds vs Flair for the world title. And of course no steroids be used. Wooooooooooooooo.

  2. That would be awesome. I also HATE Barry Bonds, but I think it would be a lot of fun to see him in the ring. If he had any class at all he would retire when he is 1 hr short of the record…
