Big Tuesday for Hoppers, Whirlies, Vikings, Cowboys, and Falcons

The Greensboro Grasshoppers received a nine inning, complete game shut-out effort from their young pitcher Graham Taylor on Tuesday night.  Taylor and the Hoppers defeated the West Virginia Power 4-0 and Taylor was the stuff.  Nine innings, seven strike outs, and only one walk issued by Taylor and the walk was only the second given up by Taylor this year.

The Hoppers got plenty of hitting with a two-run homer by third baseman Jacob Blackwood and a big triple by Greg Burns.  John Raynor and Chris Coughlan drove in runs and the Hoppers are now within one-half game of first place in the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division.

The Grasshoppers are 25-13, while West Virginia is 24-11 and the two teams will meet again today at First Horizon Park.  The first pitch for the afternoon contest goes at 12:30pm.

On the high school front Grimsley knocked off favored West Forsyth in Clemmons 7-5 on Tuesday evening.  Alan Craven made a great catch in centerfield and threw the ball back in to second base to finish off a double-play to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.  Northwest Guilford stifiled North Mecklenburg 7-1 at North Meck to set up a fourth meeting between Grimsley and Northwest on Friday night at Grimsley.

The Grimsley-NWG matchup will be HUGE especially after GHS stopped the Vikings 7-4 and then GHS went on to drop East Forsyth 4-0 to leap-frog over NWG for the home field advantage in round three of the playoffs.  NWG used their ace Logan Self and GHS pitched their top man Clint Moore on Tuesday so the next move by Alan Ashkinazy and Sonny Gann is anybody’s guess.  Grimsley may come back with Ken Daly or Jon Wilkenson while NWG could run Alex Phetteplace out to the mound.  Friday night 7pm first pitch at Grimsley and AM950 will be there for the radio broadcast.  NWG 23-4/GHS 19-10:Stay tuned.

Ragsdale saw their chances for a second straight trip to the State 3-A finals go up in smoke on Tuesday in Jamestown.  Southwest Guilford pulled of the MAJOR upset beating the Tigers 4-3 and avenging last year’s 2-1 loss to RHS.  The Cowboys are now 22-5 and Ragsdale closes things out at 23-4.

Southeast Guilford had the easiest time on Tuesday routing WS Parkland 10-0 in five innings.  Now everything gets real TIGHT for SEG as they travel to Glenn to take on the Bobcats in round three of the playoffs.  Glenn is 19-9 and SEG is 19-5.  Glenn has one of the hardest hitting men I have ever seen in my life in Chris Jacobs.  Jacobs went 3-3 in the Bobcats 9-5 round two victory over Piedmont and one of the fans said he ate a base.  I’m not sure about that, but it might have been him touching the home plate.

The Page Pirates playoff hopes ended with their 4-0 road loss to North Davidson on Tuesday night and the Pirates close out the season at 19-9.  Keep it here at greensborosports.com for FULL playoff coverage

  1. Hi Andy:

I went over to the Grimsley – West Forsyth game last night. It was an incredible finish; I’m not positive on the call, but I believe the last out, after Alan’s catch, came when the runner on first base, thinking the ball was going out for a three-run homer, passed the the runner on second base, who saw that it was going to be caught and headed back to second base.

Another big play came in the sixth inning when Cody Walker threw a runner out at the plate to keep West from what could’ve been a really big inning.

  2. SE Guilford is going to make Chris Jacobs go down-he might eat 2 bases after we get thru with him-ROY

  3. I mean to be honest Glenn has 1 good guy! SE HAS 4 Venable, Areno, Moyer, Cockman. Venable hits doubles and triples left and right. Areno I would say is one of the best in the conference. Last night he went 4-4 with 2 doubles, 4 RBI’s, 4 stolen Bases. Moyer and Cockman they know how to get the game started!!!! Cockman and Moyer really know how to pitch a good ball game!!! GOOD LUCK FALCONS!

  4. How can Southeast Guilford expect to beat Glenn? Southeast lost to Ragsdale three times and Southwest Guilford just beat Ragsdale and Glenn beat Southwest Guilford. Glenn is the superior team. Nice try Southeast but it might be time to sign up for summer baseball camp.

  5. Southeast Guilford must beat Glenn to maintain the honor of Guilford County. Southeast also has Jody Hackett, Jeff Medley, Mikey Childress, Brian Webb, Matt Craven, and soon they will have Tiger Miller and Josh Tobias. It was good to see Jim Gentry checking in to send a Shout Out to the Grimsley Whirlies.

  6. tell Rick in kville to check his stats southeast beat ragsdale once and lost to them once and we can beat glenn any time we want to-roy

  7. Porter Wagoner here, I’ll put my money on Southwest Guilford. I like them Cowboys. There’s something about country and western folks that Peaks my interest. Porter
