The Weekend in Review

Northwest and Southeast Guilford are the only teams we have left in the high school baseball playoffs.  NWG moved past Grimsley in the 4-A’s on Friday night defeating the Whirlies 6-3 and SEG worked over Glenn 5-1 in the 3-A action over in Kernersville.

NWG and SEG will be at it again on Tuesday night with the Vikings going to North Davidson and SEG headed to Anson County.  Northwest has improved to 24-4 and Southeast is 20-5.  Jake Rierson and Alex Phetteplace held Gimsley in check on Friday while Austin Moyer was the man for SEG.

The Greensboro Grasshoppers have lost 4 straight games on the road(five in a row overall) and will be back in town tonight for an eight-game home stand at First Horizon Park.  The Hoppers need to put an end to the losing streak if they are to have any hopes of staying with West Virginia in the first half.  The Hoppers are 25-18 and the team they meet on Monday night, Asheville is 29-13.

The Western Guilford Hornets(19-0-1) won the boys state 2-A/3-A Lacrosse title on Saturday beating Charlotte Catholic 12-7.  Coach Dirk Lambertson has done a super job with his WG squad.  The Greesnsboro Day School Bengal girls won the Independent School 3-A soccer championship over the weekend sliding past Charlotte Latin 1-0.  The Bengals completed the season at 16-1-1 and notched their 5th state title in the past six years.

The Carolina Dynamo continued their torrid start to the 2007 season by crushing the Kraze of Central Florida 3-0 on Saturday.  The Dynamo stopped the Florida Aces 2-0 on Friday night and the ‘Mo are 4-0 to begin the year.  The ‘Mo will be at the SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary on Wednesday take on the Cary Railhawks or as I think they should be called the Raleigh Railhawks.  The Dynamo are on the Go and we all know that their coach Joe(Brown) is the best in town.  Or at least that’s what the Press Guide says.

NC A&T finished second at the MEAC baseball tournamenet up in Norfolk, Virginia.  The Aggies, who bounced back from the losers’ bracket to make the finals, lost 6-4 to Bethune Cookman after they had just beaten BC 4-3 to force the game two championship meeting.  Charlie Gamble had a great year and tournament for A&T but with guys like Almonte, Gonzalez, Gomez, and Rodriguez; Bethune Cookman was smoking and they are the MEAC champs.

What’s up with Andruw Jones of the Atlanta Braves?  Andruw struck out 5 times on Sunday while the Braves were being busted by Boston.  The Mets are telling the Braves to “eat their dust”.

The West team for the North Carolina High School All-Star football game was announced over the weekend and I only saw two local names on the West roster.  Lionel Shoffner of Grimsley and Shane Moore of Northeast Guilford are listed, as is assistant coach Todd Shuping from Grimsley.  When I’m talking local, I’m talking about Guilford County, home of Jeff Carlton of the News and Record.  Good to see Jeff of the N&R at the Grimsley-NWG baseball game on Friday night.  Jeff had been pretty sick and it’s good to him coming off of the DL.

Is this best local sports you have ever read or what?  I get a kick just from working on this info and from covering the county from one end to another.  Greensborosports.com is your only “true source” for the local sports news.
