Southeast Guilford goes for State Title at 5pm today in Raleigh

The Southeast Guilford Falcons will go for the State 3-A baseball title in game one today at 5pm down in Raleigh at Doak Field on the NC State campus.

The Falcons are 23-5 while the Golden Falcons of Pikeville Aycock check in at 29-4.  Southeast will go with Austin Moyer on the hill and he sports a pitching record of 9-1 and an ERA of 3.12 and those are some pretty solid numbers.

The series is best two-out-of-three and Cam Cockman would be set as the starting pitcher in game two which is set to go off at 11am on Saturday morning.  Cockman’s record is 5-0.

Pikeville Aycock will counter with Grant Sasser and Garrett Davis who both have exceeded 90mph while on the hill.  This should make for a great matchup and for Southeast it will be their first trip to the State Finals since back in 2001 when they had Mike McClain and Toby Middleton leading their pitching staff.

I had the opportunity to broadcast the games back in 2001 from Five County Stadium in Zebulon when the Falcons sought the 4-A crown and will have today’s 3-A contest on the radio for you as well at 5pm on AM950.  Jim Modlin will join me in the booth today, while greensborosports.com associate Doug Cockman was on board for the ride back in 2001.  SEG won it all when Bill Slayton was coaching the team back in 1969 but that was before I had my radio or driver’s license.

Southeast will probably go with Mikey Childress at 1b, Matt Craven at 2b, Cam Cockman at SS, Jeff Medley at 3b, Adam Stone behind the plate, Justin Venable in LF, Ben Areno in CF, and Jody Hackett in RF, with Moyer on the mound.  Brian Webb can play the outfield, Dustin Nelson can provide pitching help and play some infield, while Pat Nesbitt is a utility player and I know we left somebody out but we’ll see you at the game.

The Falcons can hit the ball hard with power from Moyer, Cockman, Areno, and Medley and the entire Falcon squad has put up some impressive hitting numbers this season.

Good luck this weekend to the Falcons of SEG and they’ll will need it against a very tough Pikeville Aycock Golden Falcon team.  The Ragsdale Tigers beat Aycock early in the season 5-4 on the strength of a Tyler Rankin home run, at least that’s the word I got from Tyler last night in conversation at George’s Pizza on Randleman Road.

Southeast Guilford and Ragsdale, two teams from the same conference playing for the State Title in back-to-back years, not too shabby.
