Greensboro Grasshoppers make it six wins in a row

Two wins on the road and now four straight at home and the Greensboro Grasshoppers find themselves smack dab into their longest winning streak of the season with the magic mark now at six wins in a row.

The Hoppers defeated the Lakewood Blueclaws 4-3 on a two-run homer by Scott Cousins and the Hoppers end up sweeping the team from New Jersey four games to none. The Hoppers are now 2-6 in weekday games and the win sends the fans into a frenzy as Wednesday night approaches.

Don Czyz got the win on Tuesday afternoon and Blake Jones collected his 17th save of the season in 22 attempts. Bill Hass formerly of the News and Record and now writing “Bill on Baseball” at www.gsohoppers.com said that the homer and the three RBI’s total by Cousins were huge.

Logan Morrison had a huge defensive play himself in the top of the 9th inning when he caught a bunt liner coming in from his spot at first base and then made the toss back to first for an extra large double play that erased a lead-off single to right field by Lakewood.

The Hoppers worked and fought hard to come back and win this game and the frenzy hits again on Wednesday as the Hoppers go for 7 wins in a row with the Delmarva Shorebirds coming to town.

This may be the biggest game in Greensboro baseball history with the Christmas in July promotion going with possibly 10 feet of snow to be precisely placed on the left field berm called Natty’s Hill. This is a major event, this is not some snow-job. This will be real snow from a professional snow-making machine.

The Hoppers will try to make it seven wins in a row with the snow and who will go? We may see former Oldies 93 newsman Ed Snow, how about the great country and western singer/songwriter Hank Snow? We have already talked about Tony Snow, Eric Snow, Jack Snow, JT Snow, Frosty the Snowman and the late Burl Ives, Jerry Reed the snowman from the movie “Smokey and the Bandit”, and who else might we see?

We should have a partial list up and coming your way on Wednesday. Seven wins in a row and 10 feet of snow, how ’bout it Greensbro, let’s all go…..(New name for you and I hope you like it:Greensbro)*****Brandon “Spike” McDougall’s dad was at the Tuesday game and it was good to meet him on his way in from San Ramon, California*****

$$$$$On a post-game note pitching coach John Duffy and Hoppers pitcher Chris Leroux were in a pretty heated discussion after the game. Leroux had been in the bullpen warming up and the Hoppers did not go to him they called on closer Blake Jones instead and this seem to upset Leroux since he was the first man up and warming and then Jones got the call over Chris. Leroux will have to learn to take this in stride and go in a direction that helps the team the most. It’s all about team and not self.$$$$$
