Pitching, Timely hitting, and Defense help Hoppers win streak reach 7

The Greensboro Grasshoppers win streak reached seven games on Wednesday evening as the boys of summer let old man Winters take over on the hill and Burns had the will and Cousins knew what to do with the pill and Greensboro is still unbeaten in the current home stand.

The Hoppers have now won seven straight, two on the last road trip and now five wins in a row at home with three more home events coming up. As Don Moore mentioned the Snow pro-mo was a go and pitcher Kyle Winters was effective on a summer night and the the result, a 2-1 victory by the good guys.

Winters ran his record to 5-1 with the win and it was one of our smoothest Winters on current record with 7 innings, 7 hits, only one walk issued and 5 big strikeouts. Brad Stone came on to pitch the 8th and then Blake Jones, the stopper/closer recorded his 18th save of the season in 23 tries and Jones worked in his 3rd consecutive game.

Greg Burns hit his fifth home run of the year to tie the game at 1-1 and then Jake Blackwood hit a sacrifice fly to score Brandon “Spike” McDougall for the game-winning run. For Blackwood it was his 64th RBI of 2007.

The great defense belonged to Scott Cousins in right field. He threw out a runner at second early in the game, made an acrobatic catch up against the wall in the middle part of the game, and then he made what might be the best throw in Greensboro baseball history to nail a runner at third base late in the game. The throw to third was on a line and came across the field like it was shot out of a cannon. It saved a potential game-tying run and was the throw that has everyone talking even though we have to be moving on.

Seven wins in a row, can the Greensboro Grasshoppers make it eight straight? We will all find out on Thursday night with the 7 game winning streak on the line at 7pm at First Horizon Park. The greensborosports.com luxury box is open as Don Moore and Robert Stutts cheer on Christian Martinez and the Hoppers toward 8 wins in a row.

  1. Thanks Andy for the broadcast on WPET and on the internet–Kyle’s family and friends here in Colorado and across the country got to listen in and enjoy every minute–almost like they planned the “Winters” in July theme for Kyle!!
