MASN Becomes Official Cable Network of
the University of North Carolina at Wilmington

Network to air up to 9 UNCW Seahawks basketball games live,
builds upon extensive CAA schedule

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network and UNC Wilmington have reached a multi-year agreement that makes MASN the official cable network of the UNCW Seahawks. MASN will air up to 9 live UNCW men’s basketball games during the upcoming 2007-2008 season, along with the school’s all-sports show, “Seahawk Sports Roundup” and “The Benny Moss Show.”
The Seahawks are annually strong contenders in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). UNCW captured the CAA Championship in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2006, advancing to the NCAA Tournament each year. The Seahawks also appeared in the National Invitation Tournament in 1998 and 2001, and return three starters and 2006 CAA Tournament MVP T.J. Carter in 2007-08.

“We’re delighted about this new partnership with MASN,” said Kelly Mehrtens, UNCW’s new athletic director. “It will allow our alumni and fans throughout North Carolina and the Atlantic region to follow the Seahawks more closely than ever before. It’s just a wonderful opportunity to showcase our growing program on a network committed to college basketball.”

The addition of UNCW’s games boosts MASN’s unprecedented NCAA basketball programming. The network carries more than 150 Division I basketball games and offers the biggest college basketball package of any Regional Sports Network in the country. Last year, MASN aired a number of CAA games, featuring UNCW, George Mason, Towson and Delaware.

“We are excited to bring even more Seahawks basketball to viewers in North Carolina and throughout MASN’s 7-state territory. With our extensive college basketball schedule, MASN will also televise key in-state rivalries and important conference match-ups all season long,” said MASN spokesman, Todd Webster.

The CAA features a number of other regional schools, including Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, Georgia State, Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern, Old Dominion, Towson, Virginia Commonwealth, and William & Mary.

MASN broadcasts over 500 live sporting events every year, including over 200 NCAA football, basketball and lacrosse games. More than 700,000 households already have access to MASN on their systems and that number is expected to grow even more in the coming year.

*****On a footnote, Appalachian State has teamed up with ISP-International Sports Properties for the radio broadcast of Mountaineer football and basketball. David Jackson, formerly of Northeast Guilford High School, and son of his broadcast partner Randy Jackson(TV 2 weatherman for many years), will continue to handle the play-by-play duties. ASU has become a football powerhouse.*****

  1. This is great news. Love the smaller conferences in North Carolina, and it’s great to see them getting some love. Now, if they can only get on Time Warner…..
