Looking back at High School football Friday

I got three words for you, Friday Football Fever….I have seen that promo a number of times in the past few days and I don’t even watch TV that much. It gets in your head.

Last night our Guilford County teams got the juices flowing again and the sweat was flowing at a steady pace on every football field throughout the Triad.

Eastern Guilford pulled off the biggest upset of the night with that 13-10 win at Southeast. This is a major setback for the Falcons and for EG it is redemption after last week’s loss on the road up at Rockingham County. What happened to SEG, a team that was heavily favored going into this contest? Keith Miller said it was the turnovers that killed that Falcons, especially the fumbles late in the fourth quarter.

Grimsley had to fight for it but they got a huge road win at Northern Durham in Double Overtime. Fred Harris was there for us and the Whirlies take the 24-21 victory but now they have to go over to Dudley next week. Stefan Shepard kicked the game-winning field goal Friday and fortunately for GHS they will have starting QB Zach Maynard back under center for the Dudley game at Tarpley Stadium. The Grimsley offense was slowed down somewhat without Maynard back there last night.

Dudley found enough offense to go with their skin-tight defense and they made life miserable for Eastern Randolph by taking out the Wildcats 20-6 on Friday. Yesterday we mentioned Jenkins, Ward, and Okoro and they scored the Panthers’ touchdowns but Dennis White told us that the differnce was backup QB Ricky Lewis Jr. coming into the game and taking the Panthers down the field for 62 yards on the ground in the second half alone. Grimsley is 2-0 and Dudley is 2-0, something will have to give at Tarpley next Friday. ER, the defending State 3-A champs, stand at 0-2 here early in the season.

Paul Lambeth will have more later today on the Northeast Guilford 14-7 win at Page. NEG beats Page for the second consecutive year and the Rams are our top rated team in Guilford County. Mark Teer put together a fine report on the Ragsdale Tigers 29-15 victory over SWG, and you can find it here at Greensborosports.com. Just go back one space and check out Teer’s Take. The Tigers are on a Teer to start the year.

I said in yesterday’s installment that Western Guilford would beat Northwest Guilford by six and the final was 31-25, WG with the win. I got that one right and now WG is beginning to look like they might make some noise this season with their 2-0 start and the Smith Golden Eagles coming to Hornet Land next Friday. Let’s hear it for Western, they might be back on track toward a winning year.

I got that WG-NWG game on the money and mis-called a few others but for the second week in a row, I am the man when it comes to Southen Guilford. Last week I said that William Graves had rushed for 151 yards without seeing any concrete stats and he hit 151 on the nose. Yesterday, I said SG wins if Graves scores 2 TD’s and goes over 150 on the ground and Graves got 2 TD’s and rushed for more than 150. The result, Southern is 2-0 after Friday’s 39-12 route of Randleman. Graves is still the one and I should run for Mayor of Sumner.

High Point Central has found their high-octane man in Ricky Mitchell. HPC defeated a very good Burlington Williams program 55-35 with Mitchell scoring three times on the ground and passing for another TD. Desmeion Kennedy also ran for 3 HPC touchdowns. Williams has always had a strong program under coach Sam Story but they may down a bit this year as BW stands at 0-2 in 2007. Our man Red Marshall was at the game but his cell phone minutes ran out and he was unable to call in his detailed analysis. We hope that Red will be ready next week when ER goes to Central.

High Point Andrews allowed Smith to score but the Red Raiders had plenty of chances of their own and claimed a 35-7 win over the Golden Eagles at Simeon Stadium in High Point.

Key games next week:
Grimsley at Dudley…EG at NEG…SWG at SEG…Smith at WG…Ragsdale at NWG…ER at HPC…Page at Southern Lee…Southern Guilford at Trinity…(Outside the County it’s Reidsville at Burlington Cummings. Looking for offense? Friday night it was Reidsville 55-0 over Morehead and Cummings 89-0 over Carrboro)

  1. Andy:

Seth O’Dell did an outstanding job at QB for Grimsley last night. He consistently made great decisions, at least to these untrained eyes, on his option reads; On our first possession in OT, he took the ball inside the five-yard-line on the first play, setting up a TD; getting us in scoring position right off the bat in OT was a big play for Grimsly as Northern clearly had the momentum after scoring twice in the last four-plus minutes to tie the game.

Grimsley ran the ball effectively all night and missed some scoring opportunities (we fumbled at the goal line on one occassion) that would’ve put the game away earlier. Still, a good game that we don’t win without a great job by Seth.

Grimsley had a good crowd of folks; it was nice to see Josh Stewart make the short trip over from Chapel Hill after practice at Carolina to check out the Whirlies. He made it through Butch Davis’s training camp in good shape and is off to a good start.

    Thanks for the wrap-up.

  2. Jim, good to hear from you and thanks for the report on the Whirlies visit to Northern Durham. Good news on Seth O’Dell and sounds like Grimsley decided to move their backs in and out of the lineup and that Moore might have been hurt part of the game. Nice update on Josh Stewart and is he a candidate at QB or at another position?

We’ll watch for Jim G and James at an upcoming game and was that Leslie G on the the recent cover of The Rhino Times with the scout troop in France?
