Whirlies wear down Tigers 21-10

Two Zach Maynard to Kelsey Stevens touchdown passes in the span of a minute in the third quarter told the tale as the Grimsley Whirlies went to 5-0 with a 21-10 win over Ragsdale Saturday night at venerable Jamieson Stadium. Maynard paced the Whirlie attack with 108yds rushing on 12 attempts and 7 for 11 thru the air for another 68yds and a pair of TD’s. David Ray also had 83yds on 22 carries along with the other Grimsley score as the Whirlies outgained the Tigers 324-120.

Grimsley failed to capitalize on an early Ragsdale interception as the toughened Tiger defense would up blocking a FG attempt as the first period went scoreless. Grimsley drew first blood with Ray going over from the three with 9:08 to go until halftime to cap a 12 play 66yd 5:09 drive giving the Whirlies a 7-0 edge.

On the ensuing drive Josh Clark went 24 yards straight up the gut to tie the contest with 6:28 to do until the intermission. The 4 play 56 yard drive was aided by a personal foul against the Whirlies. After the Whirlies turned the ball over on downs inside the Ragsdale 30 the Tigers responded with their best drive of the evening by driving 57 yards on 10 plays using up the final 3:40 of the half as Kasey Redfern drilled a 33yd FG as the half expired to give the Tigers a 10-7 halftime advantage.

Grimsley though turned the tables by driving 59 yards to 12 plays in just over five minutes to start the second half as Zach Maynard completed the drive with a 13yd TD pass to Kelsey Stevens. Then two plays later the Whirlies recovered a Ragsdale fumble and one play later Maynard again hit Stevens, this time from 12yards to give the Whirlies the working margin they would need as Grimsleys defense controlled the contest the entire second half. Though to be fair it must be said the Whirlie defense got a lot of help from the Grimsley ground game as Maynard, Allen, Ray and co managed to control the ball for most of the second half, including the final 6:01 of the contest.

Grimsley goes to 5-0, Ragsdale drops to 3-2.

  1. Grimsley could have easily won this one 35-10. Its all good though. Man its gonna be great whoppin on page again and the whirlies will go undefeated AGAIN. For all of you grimsley haters get used to it because no one in the triad can beat grimsley PERIOD

  2. Grimsley will not be able to stop the Page Pirates and their QB Will Newman. Newman will be running and passing the Whirlies right out of Jamieson Stadium. Will the Thrill is for real and the Pirates may not win another game all year long but they will beat the Grimsley Whirlies on October 12, 2007.
