High School football Saturday morning Rewind

WOW!!!!! What a game that was with Page and Grimsley last night at Jamieson Stadium with the Pirates prevailing 24-23. Paul Lambeth will have the full blow-by-blow coming up later today but just a few more thoughts on what was a great game for the players and the fans.

Keenan Allen may be Grimsley’s QB of the future as he ran for a TD and also threw for a touchdown on a halfback pass. Will Newman is one of the state’s top quarterbacks and this kid should be getting some serious looks from the college recruiters. Erik Barnard was the receiver of the night for the Pirates and he also had a key run for Page. I don’t believe Corey King caught a single pass but Cameron Davis stepped up big for Page in that department.

It was a tough night in the end for Grimsley kicker Stefan Shepherd with all the bad snaps and for Page’s kicker Matt Milisor, with his field goal, extra points, and his booming kickoffs the colleges are going be calling on this junior. Newman and Milisor are both just juniors. Congrats to Page all the way around and to Grimsley it is time to get back to work.

Paul has much more coming up on this game later today.

To the picks, we went 9-2 for a three-week total of 28-4 but if you ask me the second biggest upset of the night behind the Page over Grimsley was Carver knocking off previoulsy unbeaten Glenn 17-7. We missed on the Page-Grimsley contest and then High Point Central pulled out a 22-21 come from behind win over Northwest Guilford. Ricky Mitchell and HPC won it with a TD and two-point conversion as time expired.

Ragsdale has outscored the opposition 100-33 over the past two weeks and last night the guys we have been talking about came up big again in the Tigers 40-18 win over Randleman. Sean Cathey, Josh Clark, and Matt Heavner were at it again for Ragsdale. Southern Guilford held on to top Atkins 28-21 and the man we have been carrying with us to the bank, William Graves Jr., was up to his old tricks with 191 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Storm QB Antonio Martin passed for a TD and also ran for a score.

It wasn’t easy but after leading by only 7-0 at the half, Northeast Guilford went on to defeat Morehead 21-12 at NEG with solid play from RB Tyler Woods and from lineman Michael Via. NEG travels to face Dudley next Friday. Southeast Guilford mauled Southwestern Randolph 53-0 with Luke Stewart, Terrance Topps, and Carl Offord all having big nights on offense and Justin Venable was on the spot, as he always is, leading the defense.

Western Guilford handled Rockingham County 30-12. Read Jason Gaertner’s article in Saturday’s News and Record for a great play on words about how this game came together. “There’s something about an Easter Lilly at homecoming”, says JG in the N&R. Hornets looking better now at 5-3. Eastern Guilford led early 3-0 over Reidsville on Will Gann’s 39 yard field goal, but went on to get outscored 64-7 the rest of the way and EG ended up losing to the Rams 64-10.

The Smith Golden Eagles put some points on the board, but fell to 0-8 after their 33-21 loss to the East Forsyth Eagles. Southwest Guilford fell to 2-6 and they played WS Parkland closer than we thought but came out on the bottom of a 26-17 final. We close out with a winner as High Point Andrews saw everything come together on the same night and the Raiders crushed Ronald Reagan 35-7.

It was another Wild Week and boy again let’s say WOW!!!!!, that Page-Grimsley game was a good one.

  1. Andy, You know I never thought about Keenan Allen potentially being Grimsley’s QB for next year. It honestlty sounds like a good idea, who knows? We know the kids got speed and Grimsley loves to keep it on the ground anyways. I know its too early to talk about all that, Zach Maynard has done very well and this years the team still has a chance to go deep into the playoffs. But I know we will be losing a lot of talent after this season. Hopefully, now that Grimsley has established itself as a legitamate program more students will be encouraged to show up for summer wokouts and tryouts, which was a problem when I attended Grimsley. I just hope this tradition of winning will continue, not neccesarily just against Page. It brings in revenue for the school (for all sports) as well as brings much of the city togther on Friday nights (the stands werent full when we were sub .500 every year). AND as we all know Football is KIng. But Whirlie Pride win or lose, and congrats to the Pirates, hopefully we’ll see you in the playoffs.

  2. Its going to be interesting to see how Grimsley will respond to losing the talent they have now. They lost some last year, but this year they lose even more.

Page returns about 14-15 of there returning starters next year.

  3. Yep, looks like it may be a changing of the guard( in the Metro). Even though Page is poised to clinch the Metro this season, it looks like they will definitely be the favorite next year. Will Newman, is just ridiculous, and from what you say(PagePirates44) they are returning a lot of talent. However, I am very confident in our coaching staff. Coach Saunders has proven he can be a succesful 4A coach, and I have personally worked with Coach Anderson ( Def. Cord.) when I wrestled at GHS (he was an ASST. Coach) and former football player and wrestler for GHS. He truly bleeds Whirlie Blue. Like I’ve said numerous times, Football has become a sport students want to play at GHS. Considering that GHS is the second largest or maybe the largest HS in Guilford County, who knows what talent will arrive? But most of our “extra” population is made up of Orchestra students, those that want to take Hebrew, and IB students. Please don’t take that the wrong way, but those students ususally don’t strap up and play football. Ultimately, at least when I attended GHS, academics were first priority. Teachers at GHS expect a lot, not matter whether your taking standard geometry or AP calculus. In another words its hard for some atheletes to maintain eligibility at GHS (which we heard about this past summer, with the 18 or so GHS football players in summer school). But that is a good thing, because as we all know most of the Seniors will be playing their last football game ever in a few weeks. GHS is more concerned about educating their students than getting State Championship banners. Once again, I have gone on a rant, I apologize, just bored.
