Grimsley gets back on track, Defeat Northwest 36-19

Zack Maynard went 12-18 for 243 yards and 4 touchdowns by air, along with one by ground to pace Grimsley past Northwest Guilford 36-19 in front of a homecoming throng of around 3,000 in venerable Jamieson Stadium. With the win Grimsley goes to 8-1, Northwest drops to 2-6.

Perhaps the Whirlies were still sluggish after last weeks loss to Page or maybe the team went to the IHOP for dinner because the Whirlies came out flat as a pancake as the Vikings took advantage of the slow start to garner a 11-3 lead early in the second quarter.

However injuries to QB Zach Lewis and WR/S Nathan Kirkman took the starch out of the Vikings shirt as the Whirlies ran off 33 unanswered points to post the win. The game itself turned on two key sequences as late in the first half two quick TD passes from Maynard to half brother Keenan Allen turned the 11-3 deficit into a 16-11 lead at intermission for the Whirlies. Then late in the 3rd quarter two touchdown passes to Kelsey Stevens turned a 23-11 edge into a 36-11 margin ending the competitive phase of the contest.

  1. I know they were playing NWG, but that is a score I like to see. The Whirlies are capable of putting up big numbers offensively, especialy with talent such as Keenan Allen and Zach Maynard. They should be putting up 30-40 pts. every game with the talent they posses. But, don’t get me wrong it’s good to be a Whirlie fan these days, despite that tough loss to you know who, the team has performed beyond expextations(8-1). To the Seniors, keep leading this team and finish strong, this team wil do well in the post season if they just focus on not making mistakes. Which they have been improving on ( penalties and fumbles). Regardless, the Whirlie Faithful is behind you and very proud of your performance so far this season. GO WHIRLIES!

  2. Oh yeah, Whirliefan, are you a GHS alumnus? I’m class of ’03, our best atheletic accommplisment that year was The State Champioship, won by our continually dominating Womens’ Soccer Team. Not sure how they’re doin now, but I know Coach Herk Degraw (who had coached the mens and womens teams for quite a few years) left for Northern Guilford. Last I checked, the Mens team was ranked in the 4A top ten. But the Metro has always been a tough soccer conference (one of the best in the state), GHS, PHS, NWG, and EF all have respectable teams each season. GO WHIRLIES! BLUE STEEL! FREIGHT TRAIN! ( an ’03 thing)

  3. Speaking of state championships, Women’s Tennis.. Page has won the 4A State championship 3 years in a row. They are in the the 3rd round of the playoffs this year, after beating Grimsley last night 5-1. Looking for the 4-peat.

  4. Yeah, you guys ( Page) are all about some tennis. How bout Isner? Even though he was a Pirate, I am very proud of the way he as represented GSO with his stellar play. What are they putting in the tennis teams’ water bottles over there? But good luck on the 4-peat. Hopefully our (GHS) men’s basketball team has improved to the level of our women’s team (last years state runner-up). But, I guess I shouldn’t get ahead of myself, there is a lot of football left to play. GO WHIRLIES!

  5. I love the Page/Grimsley basketball games.. in the past 3 years, page is 8-1 against Grimsley in basketball (including little 4 games). jamos, were you at the Page/Grimsley basketball game at Grimsley last year? Julius Brooks had 5 dunks.. if I remember correctly. He was only a sophomore last year.

  6. I also saw in the News & Record, that the Page Women’s Tennis team is on a 76 game winning streak.

  7. Don’t forget that Grimsley girls basketball team. Page got them in the Little Four but Grimsley went on to play for the State Championship, a game that the Whirlies led all the way until giving it up in the 4th quarter. Lucas, Hargraves, Fields, and most of the rest are all back but I’m sure that Southview and many others are still in the hunt.

The last time I was over at Page, Julius Brooks was on the line in the Mac Morris Gym working on his foul shots. That was back in September and he’s been at it the entire off-season.

  8. wooow, the team bounces back from a very dissapointing loss quick. they will need to throw the ball to make it through the playoffs, so i’m deff…pround of how zack is throwing, i think he is the first qb to throw for over 240 in the past 4 years at grimsley. Is zack getting looked at by D1 schools though?

  9. didn’t see the game Page44, goin to school down in Wilm., but was able to come back home and see the football game this year. I didn’t realize our mens basketball team had dropped off like that (1-8) vs PHS in the last three years, thats horrible. But I’d rather see the football team win than basketball. I wrestled, so we kind of held a grudge against the b ball players for getting all the attention duriing the winter season. W

  10. …. We beat u guys all four years (99-03) but I don’t think anyone knew except us and the coaches. Back then our basketball team was much better. If Cameron Bennerman (fmr. NC state plyr) would have hung around instead of going to Hargrave Military in VA we might have had a shot a a regional championship or better. But I guess right now our Ladies our holdin down the court. GO WHIRLIES! oh yeah its good to see a former Whirlie player make a post, im assuming, MR. Lumbu
