WBT-AM (1110) Charlotte launched a Saturday night oldies show called “WBT Time Machine” featuring former “Magic 96.1” host Gary “Boomer” Von Cannon at 9 p.m. on Dec. 29. Shows include historic WBT moments from the station’s 85-year history. Von Cannon’s first show was dedicated to late Charlotte deejay Rockin’ Ray Gooding. A special version of the show will air New Year’s Eve(tonight) beginning at 9 p.m. with highlights of Gooding’s final “Sunday Night Hall of Fame” show … Gary “Boomer” Von Cannon worked locally here in the Greensboro/Triad radio market for the former Oldies93 before it became 93.1 “The Wolf” about one year ago. I am hoping that “The Wolf” will pick up the N.C. State Wolfpack for the 2008/2009 football-basketball season. “The Wolf” and the Wolfpack would go good together.

Back to Gary Von Cannon. Over the years he also worked locally for WRQK K99 FM(he had the “Hello Gary Show” from 11pm-2am, an afternoon drive slot, and then later a Beach Music show on Sunday afternoons). Gary had a good run at the Big Wheel WEAL 1510AM(playing beach, blues, rhythm and soul from noon till 2pm) and he spent some time at POWER 97. I worked with Gary at WKEW 1400AM and Gary also did weekends at 102JAMZ doing a “Blast from the Past” show on Sunday nights. Gary Von Cannon is a native of Asheboro and worked at all the LA(Lower Asheboro) stations including 1260 WKXR, 710 WZOO, and the old FM station that was up on the mountain, WKRR, which is today ROCK92.

Gary is also promotions director at another Charlotte Talk station WDYT. This one is called “Think Talk”, for Charlotte. Former Bill Rosinski Show personel Bo Thompson, Chris Stowe, and Kevin “The Truth” Casey are all at WDYT.

Robert D. Raiford, staff curmudgeon for the past 21 years on the “John Boy and Billy” show on WRFX-FM (99.7), celebrated his 80th birthday last Thursday…

Former Panthers announcer and 790 the Ball talk show host, Bill Rosinski, will do play-by-play Jan. 2 for the Fiesta Bowl, West Virgina vs. Oklahoma, on XM Satellite Radio.

  1. It’s good to hear that Gary’s got a regular deal going again. I always enjoyed his work on the radio.

  2. andy i saw jim modlin on news 2 this am with erica-erica looked good on that bike – big jim might need to take a few more laps-cd

  3. I have heard people talking that Big Jim was all over that NEWS2 morning show and that they did a good feature on Fitness Today. There were some pretty rugged Letters to the Editor over the weekend in the N&R.

  4. actually Gary VonCannon got his start at 1260 WGWR (now WKXR) as CANNON before moving to 710AM WZOO…the FM station on the mountain was WCSE-FM 92.3, a country station that went after 104WTQR and at the time WPCM-FM/Burlington….Rock 92 never broadcast from Okie Mountain as the signal was bought by Dick Broadcasting and the studios were in Greensboro. I have known Gary for quite some time, but lost track of his endeavors, until reading this….
