Smith shocks Page, Dudley holds home court against Northern Guilford, Northwest takes two big ones from High Point Central, Grimsley double trouble for East Forsyth, Ragsdale runs by Randleman, there’s all kinds of headlines from last night, but I’ve got to believe that the Smith boys topping Page is the biggest.
I was at the Northern Guilford-Dudley game and the Panthers improved to (10-2) with their 64-50 victory over the Nighthawks(9-5). Ricky Smith played very well for Dudley and he had help from the freshman that has recruiters drooling, that’s PJ Hairston. Dudley also got a big Panther push from Josh Cobb who missed his first free throw and then hit seven in a row in the 4th quarter. Brennan Wyatt was also a big plus for the Panthers as hit three 3-pointers and did a fine job of running the Dudley offense. Marcus Heath had few long range shots out on the wings for Dudley but he fouled out. Brandon Pennix didn’t score as many points as usual but he hit the boards with ferocity and claimed double-digit rebounds.
For Northern, Jonathan Frye and Asad Lamot had 17 points each but the support wasn’t there like it was in the win over Rockingham County on Wednesday. The big-man 6’7 Jacob Lawson only scored 1 point on a free throw late in the game and he was effectively taken out of the game by foul trouble as he picked up three fouls early and had to sit out most of the first half. Northern had closed the gap to tie it all up at 42-42, but PJ Hairston hit a long three-pointer and it was all Dudley the rest of the way.
Dudley also won the girls game and in the JV boys contest it was 93-47 Dudley over Northern.
The Smith win over the Page boys still looks like the biggest win of the night. It was 80-79 Smith, in Brian Jones first game as the Eagles head coach. Maybe Smith is ready to take off under the leadership of the new coach. Smith is now (2-12) and Page has fallen to (8-7) and I think that is now four losses in a row for the Pirates who started out the season at (6-0). Alan Turner and Avery Hardy combined for 39 points for Smith and what has happened to Julius Brooks of Page, only 4 points for JB.
Jasmine Gill saved the day for the Page girls who were behind going into the 4th quarter as the Pirates went on to win over Smith 44-38. The Northwest Guilford boys win again 51-47 over High Point Central and now NWG has moved to 5-12 after three straight wins. Coach Mike Everette is keeping his kids together and they are now (2-0) in the Metro 4-A conference. The NWG girls just keep on winning topping HPC, 61-43. NWG girls now (15-1).
One game seperates the Grimsley girls and NWG as the Whirlies moved on to (16-0) with their 60-34 win at East Forsyth. Christian Tonkins, Keith Manley, and JB Beloved led the Whirlie boys over East 55-47 to go to (12-3). Paul Lambeth should have more on Grimsley later. Northeast Guilford grabbed two big home wins over Morehead, 47-29 girls and really big in the boys game, NEG 58-23 past Morehead. Seth Hawkins and Deandre Murray were the bigs stars for NEG last night. Ragsdale(14-2) rolls on with the Tiger boys taking care of the Randleman Tigers 77-33 behind Wally Jones with 20 and Jay Canty’s 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Ragsdale girls(13-2) bowled over Randleman 64-40.
The Southeast Guilford girls(13-4) had no trouble with SW Randolph winning 63-41 and setting up a key battle or two with Ragsdale in the upcoming weeks. Jazz Gibbs, Paris Alston, Amy Beasley, and Leah Reddicks led the Lady Falcons and Haley Hackett had a bit of an off night. The SEG boys had no luck at all falling 59-50 to SWR. Western Guilford had a rough night with Rockingham County, boys fall 67-56 to the Cougars, WG girls drop the ball 63-32. The Eastern Guilford girls continued their run toward the Mad Marchness with a convincing 66-34 win over the WS Atkins Camels. Lashonda Anderson led the Lady Wildcats(12-3) with 22 points.
The HP Wesleyan girls advanced to (15-4) for the year with a 53-19 win against WS Prep, but Prep beat the HPW boys 68-40. HP Andrews gained a split with Glenn, but barely, as the HPA boys(10-3) got past the Bobcats 64-62, but the HPA girls weren’t so lucky falling 56-53 to Glenn. The Southwest Guilford girls(5-9) tasted the sweet success as they knocked off WS Carver 55-38, with Tyisha Bridges again leading the Lady Cowboys. Finally, the Southern Guilford girls didn’t have enough as they lost to McMichael 46-40.
