Wake woes on the road continue at Clemson/ACC tonight

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Cliff Hammond’s three-point play with just over a minute to go in overtime gave Clemson the lead for good as the Tigers beat Wake Forest 80-75 on Tuesday night.

Terrence Oglesby hit two 3-pointers in the extra period, with each one putting Clemson (15-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) back in the lead.

The Tigers hit five of their six free throws in overtime, including two foul shots by K.C. Rivers that provided the final margin with five seconds to go. Clemson made just 7-of-16 free throws in the game, while Wake Forest only made seven of its 15 foul shots.

The Demon Deacons (12-6, 2-3) led 62-54 with just over five minutes to go in regulation before Clemson scored the next 11 points to take a 65-62 lead into the final minute.

Wake Forest’s Ishmael Smith hit a 3-pointer with 49 seconds to go in the second half to tie the game. The Demon Deacons had a three-on-one break as the last seconds ticked away, but couldn’t get a shot off before the buzzer.

Rivers led the Tigers with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Oglesby finished with 13 points, while James Mayes added nine points and 11 rebounds.

Smith scored 19 points to lead Wake Forest. James Johnson and L.D. Williams each added 14 points, and Chas McFarland scored nine points and had 13 rebounds.

Three of Clemson’s first five ACC games have gone into overtime. The Tigers have a win over Florida State and a loss to North Carolina in the extra sessions.

from GREENSBOROSports.com:I listened to the game on the radio and the Wake Forest players, in particular Ishmael Smith, were crying their eyes out after the game. Smith couldn’t even make it to the post-game interview with Stan Cotton and Mark Friedinger. The team sent Harvey Hale to do the interview instead. Coach Dino Gaudio was talking on the radio(Gaudio on the Radio, nice ring to it) and Dino said that his young team has to learn to take the big shot and when to take the big shot in tight game situations. Gaudio was referring to James Johnson, his freshman, who passed up a key shot that could have won the game for the Demon Deacons.

“James Johnson has to take that shot”, said DG the WFU coach. Wake Forest also has to find a way to win on the road. WFU is something like (10-0) at home and woeful on the road. Dino on the radio, that has a nice sound to it too.

I also try and track Mike Muse, the Deacon’s assistant coach who was once was the boys and girls varsity basketball coach at North Forsyth. Muse took his North Forsyth Vikings girls team to the State 4-A Championship game back in 1997 after beating the Page Pirates in the regionals up in Hickory. Page had a one point lead and the ball with just seconds remaining and they threw it into the backcourt where North Forsyth stole the ball and then Page fouled North and Karen Hartsook hit the one-and-one free throw opportunity to win it for NF and sent the Vikings and Muse to the State Champoinship game. I was there broadcasting the game on radio and my total recall is kicking in again. How I can remember Karen Hartsook, the young skinny blonde, that hadn’t shot a free throw the entire game and then nails the one-and-one is beyond me and the outer limits.

*******Wake Forest now has two injured starters that could be out for a while. They are Chas McFarland and L.D. Williams.*******
