BEN STRONG SCORES 2,000TH CAREER POINT IN GUILFORD WIN OVER LYNCHBURG

Greensboro, N.C. — Senior center Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) scored 30 points, including the 2,000th of his career, in Guilford College’s 103-53 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Lynchburg College Saturday afternoon. Strong is the fourth student in team history with 2,000 career points, joining Bob Kauffman ’68, David Smith ’72 and World B. Free ’76.

The Quakers (16-4, 11-2 ODAC), ranked 16th in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, shot a season-high 60.7 percent from the floor in their eighth straight win. Guilford made eight-of-12 three-pointers in the first half en route to a 64-23 halftime lead.

Strong, the reigning NCAA Division III Player of the Year and ODAC Player of the Week, had 16 first-half points and picked off Guilford greats M.L. Carr ’73 and Gary Devlin ’79 on the Quakers’ career scoring list in the second half. With the host Quakers headed to Hampden-Sydney College for their next game, Strong’s teammates fed him the ball on nearly every second-half possession until he finally reached the 2,000-point milestone on a free-throw with 9:01 left. After Guilford took a timeout to congratulate the 6-11 center, Strong made the second free throw and checked out of the game with his team holding an 85-38 advantage.

Strong heads to Hampden-Sydney five points behind Free for third place on Guilford’s career scoring list and 21 points behind Smith. Kauffman holds Guilford’s career scoring record with 2,570 points.

Clay Henson (Glen Alpine, N.C./Freedom) and George Neville (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) added 12 points apiece for the Quakers, who swept the season series with the Hornets (3-17, 1-12 ODAC) for the second straight year. Sophomore Mason Wooldridge (New Canton, Va./Fork Union) led Lynchburg with 18 points. Guilford, which started the week ranked second among NCAA Division III rebounding leaders, enjoyed a 41-21 advantage on the glass.

The Quakers seek their ninth win in a row Wednesday (2/13) night at league-rival Hampden-Sydney at 7:00 p.m. Lynchburg visits crosstown-rival Randolph College Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
