HS Hoops update

I was trying to choose the best game in the area last night and I decided to see how close the Greensboro Day-Calvary Baptist game might turn out. Turns out, it was about as close as you can get with the Eagles leading most of the way and then the Bengals fought back to send the game into OT where they hit their free throws and escaped with another win. GDS prevails 52-50 after they trailed and now the Bengals are (27-3) with High Point Wesleyan coming out to Lawndale Drive on Thursday evening.

Bruce Woodall, Chip Wintringham, Jay Lewis, and Javan Mitchell hit key free throws late in regulation and in overtime to help capture the victory for GDS over a very strong Calavy Baptist squad(28-5). Calvary Baptist beat Christ School and the Plumlee brothers earlier in the season. Woodall led GDS and Carter Cook the wild red-head was tops in scoring for CBCS.

In other Tuesday night action, the Southwest girls and the Southeast Guilford ladies both were winners last night with SWG moving to (8-1) conference after their 51-31 win against HPA and SEG picked up their 20th win of the year, defeating Eastern Randolph 58-47. Amy Beasley paced the Falcons and Tyisha Bridges was tops for SWG. NEG got another big win by easing past Rockingham County 41-39. Deandre Murray had 25 big ones for the Rams who are now (16-6/12-1). The Dudley girls still only have one conference loss and that was to NEG, but last night the Panthers stopped Western Alamance 51-37. The Grimsley girls ran their record to (23-0) with the Whirlies’ victory over NWG, 65-55. The Page girls were also winning, this time 70-65, Pirates beat HPC in High Point. You almost wish the same could be said for the Page boys but HPC defeated Page 69-67. This has not been the season Pirate coach Robert Kent was hoping for and big-man Julius Brooks had not raised his stock one bit this season.

Happiness abounds for coach Darren Corbett and the Grimsley boys as they took out NWG 73-58 at Northwest. Last time, the Whirlies(19-3/9-0) had to go into OT to beat the Vikings at Grimsley. Keith Manley had a big night for GHS with 18 and the rest of the squad had balanced scoring. Brandon Pennix had 20 to push Dudley(20-2/13-0) past Western Alamance 75-46, while Northern Guilford(16-7/10-3) squeaked out a win over Morehead 48-47, and NEG(16-7/9-4) rolled over Rockingham County 75-51 in the Triad 3-A conference.

The Western Guilford boys defeated Bartlett Yancey 61-50, East Forsyth topped Smith 58-52, Eastern Randolph knocked off SEG 69-59, Southern upset Eastern 70-63, and Forsyth Country Day finished off HP Wesleyan 74-64 in other boys action.

In other girl’s activity, EG handled SG by 10, 64-54, Northern won over Morehead 56-51, Bartlett Yancey mashed WG 50-30, and it was HP Wesleyan by 11 over Forsyth Country Day 58-47.
