Greensboro, N.C. – Guilford College split a nonconference twinbill with visiting Southern Virginia University Saturday afternoon. The Knights took an 8-4 win in the opener. Joe John, (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) the opening-game loser, was the hero in the second game for Guilford after belting a walkoff, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. The winning blast marked John’s 100th career hit.
In the opener, Grant Woods hit a solo homer in the fifth and Greg Larsen added an RBI single in the Knights’ third inning. Derek Snider threw five scoreless innings before the Quakers scored four in the 6th. He finished the game to improve to 2-0 on the year. Guilford’s Phil Drew hit a 2-run triple in the Guilford sixth and Zach Schlesinger added an RBI double in the inning.
Guilford’s Ryan Hairston earned his first victory as a Quakers with a complete-game five-hitter. Ryan Sloan hit a leadoff homer
in the Knights’ fifth inning.
Guilford hosts Averett University Wednesday (2/20) at 2:30 p.m.
