Joe John’s three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie and lifted Guilford past visiting Wabash College Sunday, 8-5. John also pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first collegiate save. Jason Flud also hit a three-run homer for Guilford. The Quakers’ women’s lacrosse team opened its season Sunday with a 16-11 loss to visiting Christopher Newport University. Carrie Ernst scored three goals and an assist for Guilford. Guilford’s softball team saw its unbeaten streak end Sunday as visiting Methodist swept a pair from the homestanding Quakers Sunday. The Monarchs won the opener, 11-2, in five innings.
