*****Dudley(24-2) could meet Southern Lee(24-3) in round three. Dudley won the regular season matchup between the two teams, but Damien Stedman, on SL’s top players did not play.*****

Congrats to Jacob Creed of Ragsdale on his third straight state wrestling championship which he won on Saturday at WS Parkland. Creed won his title in the 3-A 130 pound weight class and he is just a junior and he will be back next season to go for #4. He is part of the Creed wrestling family from Ragsdale with brothers Caleb and Jesse winning previous titles. The first state champ I remember from Ragsdale was Prince Deese back in 1973 in the 167 pound weight class and there have been many more since then.

William Graves of Southern Guilford took second place in the 2-A’s in the 152 pound weight class. Graves lost 6-5 to Nicolas Walters of Orange in the championship. Good work Creed and Graves and our other Guilford County champs.

I ran short on time on at my computer on Sunday but other area winners in the State HS wrestling championships included:

Timdarius Thurston 103 pound class from High Point Andrews a 9-5 winner over Joe Deangelo, Timothy Thurston 119 pound class from High Point Andrews a 7-3 winner over Jarren Cooper of WS Parkland, Marcus Blue 152 pound weight class from High Point Andrews a 3-1 winner in OT over Mike Williams from Southern Lee, and Christian McLean 215 pound class from Southwest Guilford pinned Jared Seate from Charlotte Olympic in 5:36.
All of the above boys were state champions and one would guess that the Thurstons are brothers or cousins and they along with Blue helped lead HP Andrews to a third place finish in the 3-A team competition.
Ben Lord of Southwest Guilford came in second in the 171 pound weight class falling 9-5 to Teague Little of WS Parkland.
*****Congrats to all of these young men on a job well done and again sorry we didn’t get all in on Sunday be we have you up and going today.*****

  1. Christian Mclean from SW Guilford won the State 3A 215 lb wt. class and Ben Lord came in 2nd in the 171 lb. wt. class. Christian was only 1 of 2 wrestlers to pin all their opponents over the weekend.

  2. I should have thought before I hit post, but I didn’t so sorry for the 2nd one.

Andrews also had 3 young men win 3A state championships. Two are brothers, Timdarius Thurston (103 lb) and Timothy Thurston (119 lb). Marcus Blue also placed 1st in the 152 lb weight class. Marcus is a previous state champion and also received the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.

Great job by these young men as well!

  3. Good call, I added the others to the article this morning, ran out of time on Sunday. Apologies to the HPA and SWG wrestlers and their families.
