GUILFORD’S DREW, LATIMER WIN WEEKLY ODAC HONORS

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College’s Phil Drew (Mashpee, Mass/Mashpee) won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Baseball Hitter of the Week Award and Peter Latimer (Markinch Fife, Scotland/Madras) won the ODAC’s Golfer of the Week Award Monday. The awards covered competition from Feb. 18-24. Drew also captured the Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Drew earned his second career ODAC Player of the Week Award by virtue of his .467 batting average with seven hits, including three doubles, during Guilford’s 4-0 week. The senior catcher/first baseman also drove in eight runners in the four victories, which extended Guilford’s longest winning streak since 2006 to five games. Drew went three-for-five with three runs batted in (RBI), a double and two runs scored in the Quakers’ 9-4 win over Averett University Feb. 20. His three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning provided the offense in Guilford’s 3-0 win over Wabash College Feb. 23. In Guilford’s 11-7 win nightcap victory over the Little Giants, Drew went three-for-four with two doubles and two RBIs.

Coach Nick Black’s ’02 Quakers (6-4) host Methodist University Wednesday (2/27) at 2:30 p.m. They close an eight-game homestand Saturday (3/1) versus Lynchburg College in both teams’ league opener.

Latimer picked up the fourth career ODAC Golfer of the Week prize after taking 13th in the 65-man field at the Johnny Palmer/Old North State Intercollegiate Feb. 18-19 in New London, N.C. The sophomore shot 78-78-156 over 36 holes, the fourth-lowest score among 11 NCAA Division III competitors. The reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year moved into first place on Guilford’s stroke average list with a 74.31 average through 13 rounds. Latimer has three top-15 finishes in seven events this year.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a breast cancer awareness promotion, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
