Floyd Mayweather to receive $20 million for Wrestlemania appearance/Flair-Michaels match

Shane McMahon and Floyd Mayweather’s agent, Leonard Ellerbee, confirmed to the AP that Mayweather is picking up an eight-figure payday. Forbes reported on Monday night that it’s $20 million. That’s $20 million for Mayweather’s so-called match with the Big Show at the WWE’s Wrestlemania event, the Super Bowl of professional wrestling. With a price-tag like that, the apperance of Mayweather better be bringing in a boat load of mainstream publicity.*****from www.pwtorch.com and GREENSBOROSports.com*****

The WWE set up another Wrestlemania match last night on Raw that will have Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels. In the real world outside the wrestling ring, Michaels has always had a huge amount of respect for “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair and the feeling is mutual, Flair appreciates the Michaels’ approach. Now they are going to turn these two best friends against each other and expect the fans to buy into it. Hogwash, the WWE’s crazy, this won’t sell tickets. They are going to have the guy(Michaels) who was the first to announce that Flair was headed into the WWE Hall of Fame the night before Wrestlemania, end “The Nature Boy’s” career?

To me, that creates no interest whatsoever. I guess now the WWE will spend the next month turning these two men against each other and expect the viewers to buy into it. That’s another waste of time on the part of the WWE creative team. Thanks, but no thanks. I for one, am not buying into that storyline.

You better come up with one better than that if you are going to keep my attention. The Hornswoggle was Mr. McMahon’s son was another big waste of time, especially the way they explained the end of it last evening on Monday Night Raw.

Bruce Mitchell of the Pro Wrestling Torch on last night’s WWE Raw:
Score 9.0 on a scale of 1-10…..

Bruce says…..
Damn. That was a show with a purpose – to build up the biggest pro wrestling show of the year. You had a hell of match between Jeff Hardy and Chris Jericho, a hell of a meeting between Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels, and even a hell of a silly deal with Mr. McMahon and JBL. You also had a solid, star-driven main event. The big angle between John Cena, Triple H and Randy Orton was exactly what it should be tonight. The only thing this was missing was some Floyd Mayweather/Big Show advancement, but all those people in LA didn’t know their role and booed Mayweather.

Speaking of Knowing Your Role, Dewayne Johnson’s induction of his father, Rocky Johnson, and his grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, ought to be something cool.
*****The Rock says/Bruce Mitchell says*****(I don’t agree with all that Bruce is saying but he always has some good points and many times different people see things different ways. To get it all from Bruce go to www.pwtorch.com and look for “It took me 17 years.” If you have to pay get in on the VIP page it will be worth it to get Bruce’s articles. Jason Powell, now that might be a different story…..)

  1. Shane McMahon is a mark for boxing/mma, and is the mastermind behind this. $20 mill for Mayweather??!! There truly is a sucker born every minute (if the amount is accurate). Shane told Vince that Mayweather is bigger than Ali !!!

I can’t believe they brought the big show back for this. What’s the point?

  2. Andy, I’m surprised at you. You, of all people, know the value of a buck – much less 20 million of them.

Let’s say Wrestlemania does a million buys (that’s on the high end.) The show goes about fifty bucks a pop, plus a 5 million dollar live gate. The cable company gets half of the pay-per-view. That means WWE gets about 30 million BEFORE expenses – and they’re giving 20 million to Floyd Mayweather? C’mon.

Which reminds, Jocko, when are you going to use some of your clout around these parts and get Time Warner Cable to carry WWE 24/7? Then all you have to do is get George’s Pizza to subscribe and you could be watching Dusty Rhodes get whipped by the Four Horseman again on those WCW Saturday night shows, just like you’ll be up at one in the morning watching those old AWA shows on ESPN Classics starting Wednesday night.

  3. The WWE and Mayweather will make their money. The mainstream publicity must be working, I just heard Cabell Philpott reading the Mayweather/Big Show announcement verbatim on 790 the Ball. I still agree with NJM, just because Shane McMahon and Vince like a particular area of sports entertainment like boxing and MMA, they try and turn it into a three-ring-circus and it takes away from the hard work the other guys are doing like a Jeff Hardy, CM Punk or the next guy.

As far as wrestling watching at George’s Pizza, the pizza and sub shop has been sold to outside interests tied in with the Obama/Clinton campaigns and the GPS is but a memory.

The only wrestling I’ll be watching these days will be out in front of the downtown public library when Big George Johnson takes on Barry the Table Guy in a death match for a quarter.
