HS hoops update:It’s like March Madness or Mad Marchness in February

Last night it was the boys turn to turn it on or turn the tables and we had nearly every one of our local teams win. I was over at Dudley and at halftime Mike Coger received his official nomination to the McDonald’s All-American team. This is strictly a nomination, Dudley has such a strong program they can pretty much have a player nominated every year.

William Graves the former Dudley star and North Carolina state high school player-of-the-year his senior year in HS was at the game. William is now a star for the North Carolina Tar Heels and the other night he had 10 points in 10 minutes for the Heels and he is now in the top 8 among the Tar Heel rotation and he said to tell everyone at GREENSBOROSports.com hello and he hopes all is well.

The Dudley boys made pretty quick work of Gray’s Creek taking over and never looking back in a 73-56 Panther victory. All of the Panthers joined in on the assault with Wyatt at 15 pts., Hairston 12, Pennix 11, Smith 11, and Coger 10. The Panthers controlled the boards and blocked shots like they were swatting flys on a hot day at the Warnersville Recreation Center swimming pool.

The Page Pirates kept up the pace by taking out West Forsyth 76-66 and that’s what makes this like Mad Marchness or March Madness in February. Page got hot at the end of the regular season and now the Pirates are marching on. Julius Brooks is on, 16 points and 10 rebounds last night and Page is picking up the pace. Jordan Weethe continued his torrid shooting and Deonte Maddox joined Brooks and Weethe as double-digit Pirate scorers. Watagua upset East Burke 52-49 so the Pirates will be home again for round two at the Mac Morris Gym on Thursday.

The Grimsley Whirlies recovered after their Saturday afternoon loss to Page and defeated Fayetteville Byrd 71-58. JB Beloved had a big night for GHS with 23 points and the return of Jonathan Leonard to lineup produced 11 points and stellar defense by JL in the Whirlies’ box-and-one attack. David Dupont added 10, Keith Manley 9, and Christian Tonkins 6 points.

The Northern Guilford Nighthawks found success in their first high school playoff game ever. NG stopped Harnett Central 76-62 at home in the Nighthawks’ Nest out off of Spencer Dixon Road. Jonathan Frye, one of our Steak n Shake players of the game in NG’s win over NEG at Northeast, was the man last evening for the N’hawks. Frye had 20, Dylan Berry collected 16, center Jacob Lawson had 14 points and 10 boards, and guard Michael Neal finished with 11 points. Northern will hit the road, traveling to Rocky Mount(former home of Phil Ford) for a round two game on Thursday. Northeast Guilford, behind Seth Hawkins 22 points and Markee Brown’s 14, beat SW Edgecombe 69-50. Jamal Rasool and Derrick Woods-Morrow had 8 each for NEG. NEG will travel to take on Southern Lee on Thursday. Southern Lee(25-3) ended Western Guilford’s season last night with a 71-67 win over the Hornets.

The Ragsdale Tigers bounced back after a poor showing in their conference tournament to eliminate Porter Ridge last night 63-49. Four Tigers hit for double-digits with Roberts at 19, Jay Canty 15, White 11 and Jones 10. Ragsdale travels to Kernersville Glenn on Thursday. High Point Andrews set up that round two matchup with Trinity by posting a 62-49 victory over Sun Valley. Trinity sent Statesville home with a 78-55 loss and it’s, Trinity(26-1) vs. HPA(20-6) on Thursday night, another Mad Marchness in February special.

Eastern Guilford stayed alive during the March Madness in February by topping North Lenior 85-83 in a high-scoring offensive game. Q Williams had 21 points/17 rebounds for EG, while Mark Jernigan added 19, Devin Pass and Octavius Wilson had 12 each and Tre Radcliff pumped in 10. EG at Northwood Thursday. The Northwest Guilford Vikings’ year came to a close last night after their 67-47 loss at McDowell County.

HS girls tonight:
4-A’s
Page(21-5) at McDowell County(23-3)
South Caldwell(17-9) at Grimsley(27-0)
High Point Central(14-13) at North Mecklenburg(22-5)

3-A’s
Eastern Alamance(18-7) at Northeast Guilford(21-7)
Dudley(20-7) at Rocky Mount(23-1)
Southeast Guilford(23-5) at Southwest Guilford(15-11)
Glenn(21-6) at Ragsdale(23-3)

2-A’s
Eastern Guilford(20-6) at Northwest Halifax(24-1)

*****With games night after night and with every game it is one and done, this is just about like March Madness or Mad Marchness in February.*****

  1. It must be noted that West Forsyth was without one of their star performers last night……….

Lil’ Skippy the Water Boy. He decided to attend a science fair in Topeka, Kansas. This is important to note because had he been there the blowout at the hands of the Pirates would probably not have occurred. You see, this may be splitting hairs, but Skippy’s pouring technique alone would be a minimum 5 points for West Forsyth. Add to that extra hydration that would have helped West Forsyth while they were chasing around Page’s guards and smelling their rear-ends all night. That would have to account for at least 6 points less for Page, according to our calculations. That would have made it a 71-70 win for West Forsyth. For the second game in a row the Pirates have been lucky enough to have the 2 biggest contributors for their opponents not show up. If they keep getting so lucky that might have a chance to keep advancing.

  2. Leonard scored 11 last night so if he would have played in the Page game I know he would have gotten at least 11 points and with his shut down D he plays he would have stopped at least 11 points so their is the difference if he would have played—Pirates consider yourself lucky that he was at a soccer game.

  3. Oh well, cant really go back and replay th game. Its in the past now.

Page – 07/08 Metro 4A Basketball and Football Conference Champs!
I can’t wait for next year, we have ALOT of talent coming back in both sports.

  4. um sorry pagepirates44 but grimsley was the regular season champs with a 10-0 record and that is how you get seede for the playoffs. So GRIMSLEY WHIRLIES 07-08 conference champs boys and girls!

  5. when there was a trophy on the sideline and up for grabs the Pirates smacked Grimsley right in the mouth. Regular season is for seedings, tournaments are for CHAMPIONSHIPS!
