Guilford Women’s Lacrosse 16 – Goucher 18

Greensboro, N.C. — Senior Emily Blatter (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) scored seven goals and teammate Kate Knitter (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) added five as visiting Goucher College opened its women’s lacrosse season with an 18-16 victory at Guilford College Saturday afternoon.

Guilford senior Mary Hutchins (West Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) became the Quakers’ (0-2) career scoring leader in defeat. She had a goal and five assists Saturday and moved past Jen Harrison ’91 into first place on Guilford’s all-time scoring list with 175 points on 106 goals and a school-record 69 assists. Her five assists Saturday matched a career best and stand second in school history.

Knitter’s fifth and final score of the game with 6:02 left in regulation gave the Gophers (1-0) an 18-12 lead, but the Quakers reeled off the next four scores to provide the final margin, including Carrie Ernst’s (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) tally with 0.4 seconds remaining. Knitter and Blatter both had two goals during a critical 6-1 Goucher spurt early in the second half that opened a one-goal lead into a six-goal edge with 13:24 left in the contest.

Blatter also had an assist and finished with a game-high eight point, plus six draw controls. Junior Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) added two goals and one assist. Junior Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, Mass./Lawrence Academy) enjoyed a solid all-around game in the midfield with two goals, one assist, seven draw controls and seven ground balls. She and Blatter helped the Gophers enjoy an 18-17 edge in draw controls.

Junior Jennifer Abelin’s (Somers, Conn./Somers) career-high five goals and three caused turnovers led Guilford. Senior Jordan Clodfelter (Adamant, Vt./Union-32) added five points on three goals and two assists.

Guilford hosts Catholic University of America Tuesday (3/4) at 3:00 p.m. The Gophers visit Dickinson College Tuesday (3/4) at 3:30 p.m.
