Guilford College Athletics Update

Men’s Basketball – Guilford’s men’s basketball team reached the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament final Saturday night with a 67-57 win over Roanoke College. Ben Strong led Guilford with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Quakers outrebounded the Maroons, 51-31. Guilford’s Ben Strong took home ODAC Player of the Year honors for the second straight season Thursday night. The three-time First Team All-ODAC pick is the fifth two-time winner of the prize and the first since 1988. Eric Belkoski and Caleb Kimbrough were honorable mention selections. Baseball – The Quakers’ baseball team saw its six-game losing streak end Saturday in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener. Lynchburg grabbed a 9-3 lead and withstood the Quakers’ four-run ninth to take a 9-7 triumph. Brad Buchman belted two homers for Guilford, including a three-run shot in the ninth inning. Women’s Lacrosse – Guilford’s women’s lacrosse team lost to visiting Goucher College, 18-16, Saturday in the Armfield Athletic Center. Mary Hutchins scored a goal and career-high five assists to become Guilford’s career scoring leader. Jennifer Abelin tallied a career-high five times for the Quakers and Jordan Clodfelter added three goals and two assists. Men’s Lacrosse – The Quakers’ men’s lacrosse team fell to visiting St. John Fisher Friday afternoon, 13-6. Tyler Harrison paced Guilford’s offense with a goal and an assist. Softball – Guilford’s softball team went 4-0 at the Beach Blast Tournament in Virginia Beach over the weekend. With the wins, Guilford improves to 7-2-1, the best start in the team’s brief history. DeNina Eldridge matched her school record with 13 strikeouts in Guilford’s opening-game win over Gwynedd-Mercy College Friday and fanned eight in Saturday’s 8-1 win over Hunter College. Samantha Golley picked up the win and knocked in a run in Guilford’s 5-4 win over Albright College Friday. On Saturday, she twirled a two-hit shutout in the Quakers’ 6-0 win over Cabrini College. Women’s Tennis – The Quakers’ women’s tennis team opened its spring season with an 8-1 victory over visiting Salem College Saturday. Men’s Tennis – Guilford’s men’s tennis team opened the season with losses to upper-division opponents. The Quakers fell at NCAA Division II Catawba College Thursday, 8-1. Patrick Childs and Mike Muir teamed for a third-doubles win, which accounted for the Quakers’ point.
