Kilgo and Davidson Wildcats in the AP Top 25 for the first time in 38 years

I was listening to Cabell Philpott and 790 the Ball and I heard the news about UNCG’s Southern Conference-mate Davidson returning to the AP Top 25 for the first time in 38 years. That was back in the days of Mike Malloy, Doug Cook and company and it is good to see the modern-day ‘Cats with Stephen Curry and their radio play-by-play man John Kilgo in the Top 25 for college basketball.(Fred Hetzel and Terry Holland were back in the old Davidson days too…)

Go to www.davidsoncats.com and to join the party for the ‘Cats and to get pumped up for the SoCon tourney coming up this weekend with UNCG, Appalachian, and Davidson down in Charleston, S.C.

HINES SoCon POW:
GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro senior forward Kyle Hines was named the Southern Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday for his outstanding play in a pair of wins last week.

Hines, who had his No. 42 retired prior to last Thursday’s game against Chattanooga, averaged 24.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the Spartans’ two wins last week. He shot 57 percent from the floor and 85 percent at the line in the two games, also recording eight steals and six blocked shots. He extended his streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points to a nation’s best 78 straight games.from the UNCG Spartan’s site

here’s the news on Davidson from the Davidson web site:

DAVIDSON, N.C. — On the heels of completing a perfect Southern Conference regular season and winning their national-best 19th consecutive contest, the Davidson men’s basketball team has climbed into the Associated Press Top 25 as announced Monday afternoon. The Wildcats received 74 votes and are 25th in this week’s rankings.

Though this is Davidson’s first appearance in the AP poll since the conclusion of the 1969-70 campaign, the Wildcats spent a week at No. 25 in the ESPN / USA Today Coaches Top 25 earlier this season.

Davidson enters this week’s Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament 23-6 overall. The top-seeded and two-time defending champions begin play in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 2 p.m. against the winner of #8 Wofford / #9 Western Carolina.
