Shaw Bears and Ryne Powell

Got a note yesterday from Mr. Russell Powell on his son Ryne Powell #39, a Northeast Guilford grad and the kicker for the Shaw Bears out of Raleigh. Mr. Powell was wondering if we had given the Shaw Bears any coverage this past fall and we did. They cracked our State-wide College Top Ten late in the season, and who would think that Top Ten would ever come up in discussion again but here it is, March 4, 2008 and the Top Ten is on the table again.

Here’s what we were saying back in November and at the time we didn’t know Ryne Powell was the kicker for the Bears, but now we do and we have info on Ryne down below the Top Ten rewind.

#10)TIE Davidson(6-4) LW10 and Shaw(8-3) LW:NR-Wildcats are done but they still have John Kilgo to kick around in the off-season. Shaw won the CIAA title and still might be ready to go bowling somewhere even if they have to go see our good friend Barbra Sandoval and grab a mashed potato bowl at the KFC.

Shaw out of Raleigh is 8-3 and the CIAA champs and they might be headed to the Pioneer Bowl. Learned this today while reading the Carolina Peacemaker at the McGirt Horton Library on Phillips Avenue. Way to go Shaw(Bears) and we hope to have to have in the poll next week if you keep on winning.
(They cracked the Top Ten as you can see above.)

Info on Ryne Powell:
Second team all CIAA. Led conference in scoring, PAT’s, field goals. Shaw won the CIAA championship and went to the Div II playoffs first time in school history.

He was 5th in NCAA Div II in field goals/game.

He was also Special Teams Player of the Week in weeks 10 and 11…..
