Spring sports report

It was a fairly decent night for HS baseball on Wednesday and I made my way on over to Page knowing we were looking at a 5:30 start for the Pirates and the Eastern Guilford Wildcats.

Page went out on top early 3-0 over EG and I thought we might be looking at the 10-run rule after five innings. The next thing you know Eastern starts smacking the ball and the Pirates make a few errors and EG is up 12-4 in the top of the 5th and I thought we might be looking at the 10-run rule after five with EG the victor in the abbreviated manner.

Page was going through pitchers like you go through underwear in a rainstorm after you hit a few mudholes and the Pirates were definitely running into a few potholes. Eastern was hitting every hole in creation and the Wildcats really found a big hole out in centerfield to their liking and that hole was right over the top of the centerfield fence.

Eastern did not get to the 10-run rule in five, but the EG Wildcats did pick up the win over the Pirates 14-9. Mick Raynor and Derek Holbrook both smacked home runs to center for EG and when you throw in the work that Zack Leddon and Matt Clapp did it was a busy day for the Wildcats at the plate. Nick Jones had a productive day for the Pirates and Anthony Todino joined him as the key Pirate hitters.

EG a surprising (2-0) and Page (1-1) after it was all said and done and we will have some pictures from this game up later in the week.

Ragsdale continues to be the red-hot team here locally early in the season. The Tigers(4-0) ripped Southwestern Randolph 10-3 on Wednesday with DeSean Anderson, Nate Cash, and Nick McBride leading the way. Anderson goes 2-4 with a double and 3RBI’s, Cash has a two-run double and McBride has a double and 2RBI’s. With all those RBI’s, somebody needs to get RBI-Rod Iman over there.

Northeast Guilford(2-2) got their second win of the week, as the Rams rode by Greensboro Day, defeating the Bengals 6-1. Taylor Atkins and Brandon Wyrick paced the hitting and Cody Langford got the win for NEG. Smith(1-1) stopped Carver 6-4 behind the hitting of Quentin Barr and the pitching of Antonio Santos. Ben Morrero was the star for Western Guilford as the Hornets topped Southern Guilford 7-5. Morrero was the WG winning pitcher and he got the game-winning RBI.

At Page, the Pirate lacrosse team lost 13-10 to Charlotte Providence but the PA man said loudly that the game was off the hook. Boo Hook might be the most exciting player in the area. Will Newman and Adam Hardy were also busy for Page in the loss. In other lacrosse action, WG shut out NEG 19-0, and Grimsley blasted WS Reynolds 15-2.

First-ever Home opener for NG:Smith(1-1) at Northern Guilford
Grimsley (1-1) at Southern Lee
Western Guilford(1-0) at Dudley(1-0)
