Greensboro Mens Baseball 6, NC Wesleyan 5

Greensboro, N.C. — Kit Mock pitched 8 strong innings and Alex Guerra went 2-4 with 3 RBI to lead Greensboro College to 6-5 win over 20th ranked (D3baseball.com) North Carolina Wesleyan College in the USA South opener for The Pride on Sunday at War Memorial Stadium.

GC improved to 14-7 and 1-0 while the Bishops are now 13-4, 1-2.

Mock improved to 5-2, allowed 2 runs, scattered 7 hits, struck out 7 and walked 2. Guerra helped break open the game in the game in seventh inning when GC plated 4 runs. Guerra singled in Jacob Tomb and Jeff Gregory to make the score 5-2. Kyle Bolick then singled home Gurerra for the eventual winning run.

Things got interesting, however, with GC leading 6-2 in the top of the ninth. Greg Allen, Torrey Poholsky and finally Kevin Showe took the mound for The Pride in the inning.

Showe earned the save by getting Zollie Williford to ground out to end the game at 6-5. Bobby Amato, a defensive replacement in the top of the inning, went to his left to make a snow cone grab on the outfield grass on the 4-3 putout with the tying run at third base.

“That’s a great win for this young team,” said GC Coach Ken Carlyle. “It took a near perfect pitching performance by our number one starter, and clutch plays by other team members. NC Wesleyan is nationally ranked and was in the College World Series two years ago, so I’m very happy for our program.”

Kyle Robertson (2-2) took the loss for the Bishops. Travis Beausoleil went 3-4 with 2 runs and a double for NCWC. Dan Poindexter was 2-4 with a double and an RBI and catcher Jeff Guerrie went 2-4 with an RBI for the home club.

The teams meet again tomorrow at War Memorial Stadium at 3 p.m.
