Spring sports report

We had a number of updates in last night’s article, “Taking the baseball, Around the Horn”. We have more news and scores for you today.

We had the update for you last evening on the Grimsley Whirlies(3-1) and their 7-1 victory over McMichael. Whirlies down 1-0 through about 4 innings and then come back and dominate to grab the win. Jon Wilkinson earned the win on the mound for GHS going the distance and he is a senior but the young kids, George Carter, DJ Russ, Shaq Jacobs, Yuri Johnston and others are playing a big part in the Whirlies’ early success. Matt Nettesheim, Cal Sutphin, Gabe Dimock, Lucas Wren, and the other older players are making this a good mix for coach Alan Ashkinazy.

Page(2-2) had an easy time of it against High Point Central winning 13-1 with Nick Jones doing the damage at the plate for the Pirates going 2-3 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI, while Zac Kornblun only allowed one hit and he was the winning pitcher. Western Guilford(3-0) got past NEG 10-7 to earn a Triad 3-A conference win over the Rams. Casey Jones got the win on the hill for the Hornets and is he any relation to the old Hornet baseball coach, Casey(Hoyt/Allen) Jones? The Eastern Guilford Wildcats(3-1) blasted High Point Andrews 10-0 behind the hitting of Derek Holbrook and Harrison Revels and the pitching of Chris Caudill. Caudill, five innings of work with 5K’s and Holbrook goes 2-3 with 3 runs scored and Revels had one hit and drove in two runs to go with Holbrook’s RBI.

Nate Cash had a huge day for the Ragsdale Tigers(5-1) as he went a perfect 5-5 with two doubles and 5, count ’em five RBI’s as the Tigers took care of Eastern Randolph 13-7. Ryan Andreco had a couple of hits and drove in two runs and Bennett Hixon was the man on the mound. The arch-rival of Ragsdale in baseball, the SEG Falcons(4-0), whipped Asheboro 13-3 to remain unbeaten with Eric Seders having a big day at the plate going 2-4 with a homer and four RBI’s. Seders’ three-run shot came in the first inning and backed up the pitching of starter Cam Cockman. The SEG JV’s also stopped Asheboro 9-3 to improve to (3-1) with their only loss coming in the opener when Tiger Miller forgot to put on his jacket and he nearly froze to death.

The Smith Golden Eagles(1-3) fell to the Lexington Yellow Jackets 9-6 but Charles Glover did have a home run and two runs batted in after going 3-4 at the plate for Derrick Johnson’s kids. HP Wesleyan(4-0) topped Wake Christian 10-3 and no news yet on how Michael Dimock(WFU-bound) is doing, but we hear that Tyler Hickernell is tearing the cover off of the ball for the Trojans and that he is also pitching in relief.

Northern Guilford(1-2) lost 14-2 to Bartlett Yancey and the NG JV’s also came up short falling to BY 9-0.

In that Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools tournament, West Forsyth(6-2) topped Glenn 10-6 and Mount Tabor knocked off East Forsyth 11-3. West will meet Mt. Tabor for the title tonight. Yesterday, Garrison Lassiter again led the WF Titans to victory and the deuces were wild for Lassiter with Garrison going 1-2 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases, and a home run.
