Guilford College Softball Finals – Guilford 5-1, Swarthmore 4-7

Greensboro, N.C. (3-13-08) – Guilford College split a nonconference softball double-header with visiting Swarthmore College Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers won the opener, 5-4. The Garnet took the opener, 7-1.

In the opener, junior Amber Stapler (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie (Anne Arundel)) hit a two-run homer in the fourth, the first of her career. Senior classmate Ciara Locklear (Lumberton, N.C./St. Paul’s) hit a two-run double in the Quakers’ first inning. Junior Taryn Pulvermuller (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) earned the first save of her college career with a scoreless seventh inning. Swarthmore’s Melissa Emmerson hit a two-run double in the fifth and Maggie Vizcarra added an RBI double in the fifth as the Garnet drew to within one run.

In the nightcap, Kathryn Riley yielded an unearned run in the first inning and then cruised to a complete-game five-hitter. She fanned 10 batters and had two strikeouts in four innings. Katherine Gold sparked the offense with a two-run single in the first and added an RBI single in the fourth for Swarthmore. Teammate Lauren Marczi walked three times and had an RBI double in the seventh inning. Stapler had two infield hits for the Quakers.

Guilford returns to action Saturday at league-rival Virginia Wesleyan College.
