SSR:Spring sports report

Light schedule on Thursday but some very close games with Northwest stopping Southwest 5-4 in 8 innings and those same two teams will meet today at NWG, plus Ragsdale battled and came out on top over Southern Alamance 9-8. Greensboro Day School’s Bengals under the direction of Buddy Walker picked up a win against North Raleigh Christian 11-9 and Vandalia Christian(VCS) was four better than than Woodland, as the VCS Vikings took the contest 9-5.

Greensboro Day’s golf team with our old buddy Bruce Woodall taking the medalist honors with a 36 over 9 holes at the par 72 Greensboro Country Club Carlson Farms course, helped the Bengals defeat New Garden Friends School by 59 strokes.

Back to the baseball fields, in that NWG win over SWG, the Vikings were led by Logan Self and Robbie McIntosh. Self had a key double and McIntosh scored the game-winning run. Alex Swim was 3-4 for NWG. SWG had Brock Hudgens and Jeff Gilley leading the Cowboy charges with Hudgens going 2-3 with a couple of doubles and he scored two runs. Gilley had one hit and an RBI. On the mound for SWG, Blaine McCraw struck out seven batters in seven innings. NWG(2-2) and SWG(2-3) will meet again this afternoon.

Ragsdale had Kyle Brandenburg saving the Tigers’ day, as KB was the man that drove in the winning run and he was unhittable in relief for the Tigers on the hill. Ragsdale also got help from their centerfielder, DeSean Anderson, who had two big hits as did Big Ben Fultz. Cody Meyers provided the power for RHS(6-1), as Cody connected for a home run and he had 2RBI’s, after going 3-3 at the plate. Ragsdale is in action again on this Friday afternoon hosting Trinity.

For Greensboro Day(2-2) in that win over North Raleigh Christian; Matt Cox, Matt Gorga, and Ryan Sudnik paced the Bengals to victory. Cox got the win, Sudnik the save and Ryan was 2-3 with 3RBI’s and Gorga goes 2-3 with 2RBI’s.

  1. On the Northwest Guilford 5-4 win over Southwest Guilford. It was good to see Tommy Plante(1-0 get the win in the seventh inning. Tommy was not able to play his junior season due to injury. He worked hard in the spring to get healthy again and was able to hit and play in the field in the summer thanks to Coach Ron Sharpe with the 17-19 Palomino Diamondbacks. Ron put Tommy on the mound in the Fall and Tommy pitched very well. It is coaches like Ron Sharpe that helps these young men.

Tommy went into the Southwest game the next night in the sixth inning with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out. Tommy did not give up a hit or walk in the sixth to shut down SW and only gave up one hit in the 7th with no runs or walks. We are very proud of Tommy on his return to the mound for Northwest and very thankful for coaches like Ron Sharpe.

  2. You are exactly right about Ron Sharpe. Sharpe and his people have put in years of long, hard hours to help out on the local baseball scene with the Diamondbacks and other teams.

He has helped a lot of kids.
