Guilford College Women’s Lacrosse 15, Lynchburg 11

Greensboro, N.C. (3-15-08) – Sophomore Shelly Nogueira (East Calais, Vt./Union-32) scored a career-high four goals in visiting Guilford College’s 15-11 lacrosse win over Lynchburg College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.

Sophomore goalie Alyzza May Callahan (Fairhaven, Mass./New Bedford) made a career-high 17 saves in the victory, Guilford’s first over Lynchburg since 1992. The win ended the Quakers’ 17-game losing streak to the Hornets.

Nogueira scored two of Guilford’s final three goals, which helped the Quakers thwart a Lynchburg comeback. Mary Hutchins’ (West Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) second score of the day with 18:26 left in regulation opened a 12-8 Guilford lead, but Lynchburg answered with three straight goals. The Hornets’ Lindsay Gengras scored twice in the spurt and her free-position goal with 13:48 remaining made it a 12-11 game.

Nogueira stopped the Lynchburg spurt with just under nine minutes remaining off a Carrie Ernst (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) feed and finished the scoring with 3:10 to play.

Callahan made her first start of the season and responded with the most saves by a Quakers’ netminder since 2005. She had nine stops in the first half and also led Guilford with five ground balls.

Jordan Clodfelter (Adamant, Vt./Union-32) also had five pickups, along with four points on two goals and a game-high two assists. Ernst, Hutchins and Carolyn Rodda (Bethesda, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) also scored twice for Guilford.

Deana Welsch led Lynchburg with three goals. Gengras and Nichole Locher both contributed two goals and one assist.

Guilford returns to action Tuesday at crosstown-rival Greensboro College at 2:00 p.m.
