There were a couple of games that were played on Saturday and the end results proved to be very big. The Southwest Guilford Cowboys knocked Ledford from the ranks of the unbeatens Saturday, topping the Panthers 10-5, behind the hard work of Bo Rein and Brett Underwood. SWG improved to (4-3) with the victory and the Cowboys seem to be coming into their own after their successful Friday/Saturday run. On Friday night, SWG topped Northwest Guilford 4-2 with Esterlin Paulino notching nine strikeouts on the hill for SWG to secure the complete-game victory. NWG drops to (2-3).
Also on Satruday afternoon, the Southeast Guilford Falcons saw their perfect season come crashing down as the rain came falling down at SEG, with the Glenn Bobcats picking up a 4-0 rain-shortened win. The game was called in the top of the sixth inning when heavy rain hit the area surrounding 421-South and with lightning and thunder flying around SEG had no chance to finish this one. Eric Seders got the start for SEG and he got roughed up a little but SEG could not get any substantial hits off of the Glenn pitching. The Falcons started Jeff Medley at first, Trey Gilmore at second, Cam Cockman at short, Josh Tobias at third, Justin Venable in left, Pat Nesbit in center, Taylor Hodgin in right, and Gary Bingham was behnd the plate. Austin Moyer was the Falcon DH. Tough loss by SEG to fall to (5-1). The SEG JV’s won out over Glenn to improve to (5-1). Back on Friday both SEG teams topped Randleman with the varsity taking the Tigers 5-0 with Austin Moyer picking up the win and Cam Cockman and Pat Nesbit both went 2-4 while Josh Tobias had a double and two RBI’s and Justin Venable hit a home run, going 2-3 at the plate.
Back on Friday, Ragsdale took out Trinity 8-1 and now the Tigers have seen their season mark jump to (7-1) with the only loss being that 14-10 extra-inning loss to Hopewell. On Friday, Kyle Brandenburg, Ben Fultz, and David Coffey all came up with the big hits and Nick McBride was the winning pitcher. McBride struck out 8 Bulldog batters. Brandenburg had the biggest bat for Ragsdale going 3-4 while scoring three runs. Western Guilford is the only remaining area unbeaten team after the Hornets’ 15-7 win over Morehead on Friday. WG stands at (5-0) and for Western against Morehead Ben Marrero and Macon Smith combined to go 5-7 at the plate and Ben had 4RBI’s and Macon had 3. Casey Jones had two RBI’s and he was 3-5 in the hitting department.
Other Friday finishes showed Dudley(3-2) grabbing a Triad 3-A conference victory with the Panthers 5-1 win over Bartlett Yancey. Rueben Torrellas struck out 10 BY Bucaneer batters and RT was 2-3 and scored two of the five Panther runs. Taylor Atkins was the winner with six big strikeouts in Northeast Guilford’s 20-3 win over Northern Guilford. NEG(4-4) had home runs from Caleb Primm(grand slam), Davis Turner, and Evan Underhill in the victory over the NG Nighthawks(1-3). Southern Guilford(3-4) pounded Reidsville 14-7 with Chris Couch, Brent Young, and Jason Newsell providing the power at the plate and Robert Knight was the winning Storm pitcher. The Storm was down 7-0 before they battled back to out-score the Rams 14-0 to earn the SG win.
Grimsley found the going rough on the road again as the Whirlies fell at Southern Alamance 4-3 on Friday. The Patriots pulled out the win but the Whirlies had solid efforts from Cal Sutphin 3-3 and Gabe Dimock 2-3. Grimsley goes to (3-3) on the season and they will be at Page on Tuesday.

High Point Christian at High Point Central(HP Christian is supposed to be REAL tough with a load of kids that went to the AAU Nationals last summer on this team. The baseball fans in High Point are saying that HP Wesleyan and HP Christian are the two strongest teams in the County, or least that’s what they have been telling me. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how the private schools stack up in baseball. The coach at Christian, who has a son on the team, has said, “Baseball is what will put this school on the map”.
It was good to see SW victories on Fri. and Sat. against two really good teams. Just wanted to mention a few other young men that had good games. Will Kellam, Jeremy Hall, and Christian McLean all had multiple hits on Friday and continued to hit the ball hard on Saturday. Jeff Gilley had a big hit as well on Friday and has played great at third as well. Brock Hudgens has continued to hit the ball well also. SW will have three conference games this week.
Kudos to Alex Swim at NW. Great kid who is arguably the toughest out at NW and has one of the strongest arms around.
What can you tell us about this Bo Rein kid, the nephew of the late Bo Rein who coached football at N.C. State and later died in the plane crash on his way to LSU, I think it was. Big kid, strong kid, has his family always been living around here?
Bo is a great young man. He has grown a ton in the last year. He is a middle infielder and Saturday was his first varsity pitching start. He is a competitor and will continue to get better. This is Bo’s junior year. Sat. was also his first home run and it was a bomb.
Bo has always lived here as far as I know. His mom is a teacher at SWHS. He has good ‘athletic’ genes on both sides. His uncle on his moms side is Johnny Evans who also played at NC State and now announces. Bo’s first cousin, (Johnny’s son) quaterbacked at NC State for the past two seasons.
Bo’s mom has done an excellent job in raising him. He is a great ball player, but more importantly a great young man.
