SSR:Spring Sports Report/Dudley beats HPC and snow on Monday morning

The Dudley Panthers didn’t let a few snow flurries get in their way as they defeated High Point Central this morning 5-1 in our Spring Sports Report from the Grimsley Easter Baseball Tournament. It did not look like or feel like Spring as the game got going at around 9:30am but Dudley got the win and set themselves up for a chance at the Championship on Tuesday night.

RL Patton, out of Morganton, is playing later today and they might have a spot in the title game if they win and play tough defense out in the field. On Saturday, Patton shut out North Stanley 6-0. The Trinity Bulldogs were set to roll at 11:30 and and the Bulldogs topped High Point Andrews 9-3 Saturday morning. There are still 4 undefeated teams left in the tournament.

Dudley, Patton, Trinity, and Grimsley are the remaining unbeatens. The Grimsley Whirlies edged Burlington Williams in wild one on Saturday night 15-13. The Whirlies used four pitchers; Kevin Rose, DJ Russ, Taylor Lee, and Lucas Wrenn. Wrenn got the win as he came in the bottom of the sixth and was able to get the Whirlies out of a big jam. Williams had two men on and only one gone in the bottom of the seventh but third baseman Logan Dunn caught a pop-up and Lay Lay Brown hauled in a fly ball out in centerfield to end it and it gave the Whirlies the hard-earned victory. Lead-off man Matt Nettesheim got on base all five times for Grimsley and first baseman George Carter hit a two-run home run to right field to help the Whirlies’ offense. Rightfielder Patrick Ochesli made at least two fine defensive plays in RF and he had two hits for Grimsley.

Grimsley(5-4) will play another Bulldog team tonight when they meet the Thomasville Bulldogs at 7pm. The Whirlies have to hope all the other unbeatens lose and that the Whirlies can put together a strong defensive stand in order to get them into Tuesday’s title game. Dudley’s chances look pretty good with their two game scores being 13-1 over Thomasville and then this morning’s 5-1 win against High Point Central. The Dudley Panthers have put up some pretty big numbers over the past several days with the 5-1, 13-1, and the 16-3 win over Northern Guilford back on Friday night.

Southeast Guilford and Western Guilford(6-2) will be playing in the Graham Easter Tournament again today down at the Graham Middle School. Graham topped SEG(8-2) on Saturday evening 7-3 and the SEG Falcons will be back in action today at 4pm. Southeast had won this tournament the two previous years and my scouts Adam Matthews and Don Venable were not too happy about how this turned out. SEG had been trying to get a Wooden Bat tournament down at SEG for Easter but they couldn’t pull it off according to Mr. Venable.

SEG in action at 4pm and Grimsley faces the Thomasville Bulldogs and EJ Abrams-Ward at 7pm. Dudley(7-2) is already done for the day and will have to sit back and watch the rest of the games to find out who they will be playing on Tuesday. Back in that game from Saturday, Dudley was led by 3b Ray Crawford’s HR and 3RBI’s, while catcher Ronnie Burkes had a triple and 2 RBI’s. The winning pitcher on Saturday for Dudley was freshman AJ Williams.

The Grimsley-Thomasville game will available for you on the radio tonight at 7pm on AM950 or go AM950 WPET.com.
