Baseball Guilford’s baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision to crosstown-rival Greensboro College Tuesday night at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro. Josh Sumler went one-for-four with an RBI and reliever Drew Gurkin fanned five in two innings of work. The Quakers dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference twinbill at Hampden-Sydney College Saturday. The Tigers took the opener, 2-0, despite a strong pitching performance by Guilford’s Ryan Hairston. David Helms homered and Phil Drew went four-for-four in the nightcap, but Hampden-Sydney rallied for a 6-5 triumph. The Quakers dropped a hard-fought Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest to visiting Roanoke College Saturday, 7-2. The Maroons are ranked 16th in March 18 South Atlantic Region Division III rankings. The Quakers posted a 5-4 win over Methodist University March 20. The Monarchs are ranked 14th in the March 18 ITA Division III South Region Rankings. Men’s Basketball Guilford’s Ben Strong collected first-team All-America honors from DIII News, D3hoops.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) last week for the second straight season. The senior center was also named the south region’s top player by D3hoops.com and the NABC. On Tuesday, the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association announced Strong as the lone unanimous selection to the organization’s college division all-state team. Women’s Lacrosse Senior Mary Hutchins captured the Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council Monday. She scored a season-high seven points on three goals and four assists in Guilford’s 18-6 victory over Greensboro College March 18. Men’s Lacrosse The Quakers fell at the University of the South Friday night, 11-10, in overtime. The setback marked Guilford’s third by two goals or less. Softball Guilford split a nonconference doubleheader at Meredith College March 21. The Quakers won the opener, 12-1, in five innings behind pitcher Taryn Pulvermuller’s first win of the season.
