Guilford College Baseball Finals – Guilford 4-8., Washington and Lee 3-6

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped an ODAC doubleheader to Guilford on Saturday afternoon at Cap’n Dick Smith Field. The Generals lost the first game, 4-3, and then fell in the nightcap, 8-6.

The initial game remained scoreless through 3.5 innings until W&L junior second baseman Byron Peyster’s (Washington, D.C./Maret) sacrifice fly plated sophomore first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Ct./Taft School) in the bottom of the fourth. GC even the score in the top of the sixth off a home run from junior designated hitter Brad Buchman (Indian Shores, Fla./Lenoir-Rhyne) and then extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh, aided by a Buchman two-run double. Sophomore catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) smacked a double to right field, scoring two runs and tightening the score to 4-3, in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally was cut short as the Quakers retired the Generals’ final two batters.

Lewis had one hit in four at-bats with a double and two RBI in the opener, while sophomore shortstop John Ditore (Shoreline, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) and senior right-fielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) both batted 3-for-4. Peyster was 2-for-2 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Senior left-hander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) took the loss (1-1), after giving up two hits and three earned runs in just 1.1 innings of work.

GC was led in game one by Buchman’s 2-for-4 outing with a double, a home run and three RBI. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Hairston (Clarksville, Va./Danville C.C.) tossed the entire seven-inning game for the Quakers, allowing 12 hits and three earned runs.

In the second game, GC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first frame and led 6-2 entering the fourth inning. Serenbetz homered to right center in the bottom of the fourth and Madden hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4, but GC immediately plated two runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-4 advantage. W&L attempted another comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Ditore tallied an RBI single and Madden notched an RBI double, slicing the lead to 8-6, but it wasn’t enough as the Quakers held on for their second win of the day.

Serenbetz totaled two hits in four at-bats in game two, along with a home run and two RBI. Junior center-fielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) hit 2-for-3 and Madden was 1-for-4 from the plate with a double and two RBI. Senior right-hander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) was saddled with the loss (3-2) after allowing five hits and four earned runs in the first three innings of the contest.

GC (14-14, 4-6) was led by sophomore catcher Jason Flud (Jacksonville, N.C./Pfeiffer), who had one hit in three at-bats with two RBI. Buchman hit 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while senior first baseman Phil Drew (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) posted a 2-for-5 performance from the plate with a double.

The Generals (16-8, 7-6) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shenandoah for a 4:00 pm contest.
