Guilford College Lacrosse’s Kelly Gonzalez Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College senior Kelly Gonzalez (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) recently received an Ethnic Minority Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship Award, given by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The award was given to 13 ethnic minorities and 13 female college graduates who are seeking admission or have been accepted into a sports administration or related program that will help them obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics. It was developed by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics and the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee to increase the opportunities for qualified minority and female candidates in intercollegiate athletics.

Kelly Gonzalez

A three-year starter and captain for coach Matthew Grosso’s lacrosse team, Gonzalez received the club’s Coach’s Award and Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors in 2007 after ranking second on the squad in caused turnovers and third in ground balls. Her 50 career caused turnovers in 50 games ranks second in school history. Gonzalez also received the 2008 Nereus C. English ’26 Athletic Leadership Award, the college’s highest honor for athletic ability and leadership. She donates much of her time a student athletic trainer for the football and basketball teams. The senior defender is a member of Guilford’s Scholarship Society, president of Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and a 2007 recipient of the school’s Lefty Ralls Scholarship. A two-time All-ODAC Academic selection and six-time member of Guilford’s Student-Athlete Honor Roll, Gonzalez is a dean’s list sports medicine and health sciences double major.

Coach Grosso’s Quakers are 5-4 (1-1 ODAC) and have won five of their last six games. Guilford visits Randolph-Macon Saturday (4/5).
