Guilford Football Announces 2007 Team Award Winners

Greensboro, N.C. — Six Guilford College football student-athletes received awards for their achievements during the 2007 season. Senior Joe Joyner (Lillington, N.C./Greene Central), junior Mike Six (Clemmons, N.C./Reynolds), sophomore Hunter Chappell (Elizabeth City, N.C./Northeastern), redshirt-sophomore Hagen Miller (State Road, N.C./Elkin (Mars Hill)), sophomore Kevin Cumberland (Baltimore Md./Calvert Hall), and senior Brad Davis (Lexington, N.C./Central Davidson) were the selected recipients by the team’s coaching staff.

Joyner, a three-year starting wide receiver, was chosen as the Offensive Most Valuable Player. He earned First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recognition in 2007 and honorable mention All-ODAC in 2006. Joyner also received the 2008 Nereus C. English Athletic Leadership Award. He ranks second among the Quakers’ career leaders in touchdowns (31), third in receiving yards (2,471), fourth in receptions (202) and fifth in scoring (188). Joyner enjoyed his finest season as a senior last fall when he ranked 14th in the nation and third in the league with 7.4 catches per game. His 96 points and 16 touchdowns last year both rank second in Guilford history.

Six was named Guilford’s Defensive Most Valuable Player. He earned Second Team All-ODAC honors and finished the 2007 season with 58 tackles, including 29 solo stops. The defensive lineman recorded a team-high three sacks and 10.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Six led the Quakers and ranked seventh in the league in tackles for loss per game (1.3). He won the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week and the Student-Athlete of the Week award for the week of November 11. Six also was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Chappell, a place-kicker, received the Special Teams Most Valuable Player Award. He recorded three field goals in six attempts last fall (50%). Chappell was third on the team in scoring with 42 points. He recorded 33 points-after touchdowns (PATs) this year which ranks fourth in school history. Chappell recorded seven PATs during the September 22 loss to Hampden-Sydney College, which was the most PATs in a single game in school history.

Miller, a wide receiver, was named the Quakers’ Most Improved Offensive Player. He led NCAA Division III with 10.3 receptions per game after making a school- and ODAC-record 103 grabs for 976 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2007. The 103 catches stand 11th all-time in NCAA Division III history. His 97.6 receiving yards per game ranked 25th in the land and third in the ODAC. The first-year starter also finished among the league’s best in scoring (5th, 7.0 ppg.) and all-purpose yards per game (10th, 105.7). Miller had seven games with at least 10 receptions, including three 14-catch efforts that stand third in school history. The 6-1, 175-pound wideout caught 14 passes for 199 yards and three scores, all career highs, versus Hampden-Sydney. His 199 receiving yards stand third in school history.

The Most Improved Defensive Player prize went to Cumberland. In 2007, he ranked 14th on the team with 19 tackles (11 solo), and sixth with four tackles for a loss of 20 yards. Cumberland’s best game was Sept. 1 against Southern Virginia University where he had five tackles, four solo. He also made three tackles, including one for a loss of 10 yards, in the Oct. 20 contest against league-rival Washington and Lee University. Cumberland also played on Guilford’s special teams.

Davis, an offensive lineman, received the Charlie Griffin Award for loyalty and dedication. ASecond Team All-ODAC pick, he started each of his four years mostly at left tackle. He had 33 starting nods in 34 appearances and provided exceptional leadership throughout his career. Guilford’s offense has ranked among the nation’s best in the recent years with Davis on the line.

Coach Kevin Kiesel’s club finished with a 6-4 overall record (2-4 ODAC) for the team’s first consecutive winning seasons since 1990-91. Guilford set or tied at least 26 team and individual school records last season. Kiesel, who moved into fifth place among Guilford’s all-time football coaching wins leaders, could return as many as 82 letter winners in 2008.
