Guilford College Athletics Update

Softball – Guilford’s softball team swept two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) games from visiting Randolph College Wednesday. Samantha Golley struck out a career-high nine batters as the Quakers won the opener, 9-1, in five innings. Morgan Freyer had a career-high three RBIs in the nightcap, an 11-1 Guilford victory in five innings. The Quakers split a nonleague double-header at Averett University Sunday. Guilford claimed a 10-9 win in nine innings in the opener, thanks to a career-high four hits by Taryn Pulvermuller. Guilford split an ODAC twinbill Saturday with visiting Eastern Mennonite University. Golley’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Guilford to a 4-3 win in the first game, but the Royals rallied for an 8-7 victory in game two. Baseball – Byron Myers and John Goodwin homered for Guilford in the Quakers’ 9-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) loss at Roanoke College Wednesday night. The Maroons rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out the win. Drew Gurkin struck out a career-high eight batters in 4.2 innings of relief. Guilford swept league-rival Washington and Lee University Saturday for the Quakers’ first ODAC road sweep since 2005. Brad Buchman doubled and hit his team-leading ninth homer of the year in Guilford’s 4-3 opening-game win. Gurkin and Reid MacLean combined on a solid 8-6 win in the nightcap. Women’s Lacrosse – Guilford’s Kelly Gonzalez received one of 26 NCAA Ethnic Minority Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship Awards recently. The senior defender is a three-year starter and team captain. She won Guilford’s English Athletic Leadership Award in February of this year and will pursue a career in sports medicine after Guilford. The Quakers won for the fifth time in six games Sunday with a 19-4 triumph over visiting Sewanee. Carrie Ernst scored a career-high four goals and helped Guilford to a 14-3 halftime lead in the win. Golf – Guilford placed seventh among 32 teams at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Sunday in Camp Lejeune, N.C. The Quakers shot a three-day 895 and placed four among Division III teams, trailing tourney champion Methodist University, Oglethorpe University and Ohio Wesleyan College. The Quakers’ Burton Wood shot 219 over the three rounds and placed ninth among 162 contestants. Guilford maintained its hold on seventh place in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll, released Tuesday. Methodist, which has won four spring tournaments, is ranked first. Football – Guilford awarded superlatives to six students from the 2007 season at the team’s annual banquet in February. Joe Joyner was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, Mike Six won the Defensive MVP and Hunter Chappell was named the Special Teams MVP. Senior offensive lineman Brad Davis took home the Charlie Griffin Award for loyalty and dedication to the program.
