Greensboro, N.C. – Guilford College and Eastern Mennonite University split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Quakers’ McBane Field. The Royals won the opener, 4-3. Guilford took the nightcap, 9-8.

In the opener, Eastern Mennonite scored twice in the first inning and twice in the second inning and hung on to win. Jesse Baker improved to 2-6 with a complete-game eight-hitter. Jameson Jarvis plated two runs in the first inning with a two-run double. Both second-inning runs were unearned. Chris Baker’s sacrifice fly scored the fourth run.

Guilford pitcher Ryan Hairston (5-5) fanned six and did not allow a hit after the second inning. Phil Drew had an RBI single in the third inning, but the Quakers left the bases loaded. Guilford scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning.

In the nightcap, Jay Cox scored pinch runner Jordan Nelson with a two-out single in the ninth to help Guilford split the doubleheader. The Quakers built a 6-3 lead through six innings, thanks in part to a solo homer by Phil Drew and an RBI double by Alex Starbuck (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth). Eastern Mennonite tied it with three runs in the eighth inning, thanks to RBI singles by Jarvis and Zach Polloni. Guilford answered with two in the bottom of the eighth as Starbuck delivered his second RBI double of the game. EMU’s Chris Harpine delivered a game-tying two-run single in the 9th, which tied the game at 8-8.

Starbuck finished with four hits on the day, including three doubles.
